Windows vista activation OEM SLP key RRS feed

  • Question

  • My hard disk is failuring (30% health) and i need to replace it. I have extract the windows key from my machine (with the Magical Jelly Bean software). This key is the one pre-installed from factory. (i presume that is the OEM SLP key) The windows key under my laptop (in the sticker) has been erased due to usage (i presume this is COA SLP key). If i replace the hard drive and install windows again with the OEM SLP key, how i will do the activation? it will be automatically?

PS i havent change any other hardware

  • This is a Windows 7 forum.  The Vista forum is at

You need to give the make and model of your computer when asking questions in the forums.  It is key info for us.

You need to use the recovery partition or the recovery disks provided by the manufacturer when you reinstall on the new hard drive or make an image right away so you can use that.  I use Acronis True Image Home.  SLP keys are self activating.  You should not be asked for the key.
