Problems with Outlook

  Please can anyone help a silver surfer who is practically computer illiterate !  Please no techie answers which I will not understand.  I am being driven crazy by my computer constantly telling me Outlook was not closed properly and archive must be checked for faults - - even when it was closed properly.  This takes about 30 minutes.   Then Outlook often freezes,  is very slow and constantly comes up with a 'Not responding' message.   I am using Windows XP.  What can I do?
