WHS + HDHomeRun + Xbox media center extender RRS feed

  • Question

  • Right now I have a set up with WHSv1 and Windows 7 running on a Hyper V server.  The Windows 7 VM is used for Live TV via the Xbox and recorded shows go onto the WHS share , but it's kind of a clunky setup.  Is there a way I can simplify this with WHS 2011?  Can I enable the Hyper-V role under WHS 2011 to run a Windows 7 VM for media center recording?

No. Windows Home Server 2011 is supported as a Hyper-V guest, however.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • damn, that's the same setup I have now and it's kind of a headache.  Any other way to make the WHS box record TV and send it my Xbox?

  • You can use any virtualizaiton tool. But I think virtualization in the home or very small/micro business is a bad plan. Your savings are generally minimal, and if your virtual host machine burns up you lose everything running on it until you can rebuild it.

  • So I'm better off spending $200-$500 on another computer just to act as a portal for Media Center on my Xbox and record TV?
