    Hello, I've had this error for a while and have just left it alone because I could not find any way to fix it. However, my computer has been freezing quite often recently and I'm hoping it is due to the fact that I cannot update Vista. This computer was built by my brother back in 2007, I was unaware of the fact that he had bought XP to start when he first built it, and he also was under the impression that he had bought Vista when he bought all of the parts. In short, this copy of vista is technically an upgrade version but we never actually used windows XP on this computer when it was built. Anyway, a few years back I had to wipe the hard drive because the computer would no longer start. Unfortunately I did not know that I would not be able to reinstall Vista because it is an upgrade copy and not a clean install copy so when I finally got the computer working again I discovered that I could not activate my copy because "This copy is not meant for clean installs" I still have the case, the disk, the sticker and the key, but I'm stuck with an invalid copy of Vista and a computer that freezes frequently. Is there anyway to get it working again or am I just simply screwed? Are there still activation keys being sold? I'm certainly not going to buy a copy of Windows 7 for this computer. Any and all help would be much appreciated, if here is any additional information you require, I would be happy to provide it.

    Is there a COA sticker on the case of the machine?
    Do you have a valid available Full license for a qualifying version of Windows (e.g. a Retail version of Windows XP) for use on that computer?
    If neither, then the installation is non-genuine, and you will have to purchase a Full license for Windows to be able to make your system genuine.
     
    If the answer to one of the above is ‘yes’ then you may be able to get it activated yourself (it would have been a LOT simpler to have done it at the time!), but it would require
     
    1) download a legal copy of Vista SP2 – NOT a torrent!
    2) a repair install using the disk, after rearming the system to hopefully get it to show genuine again – I don’t know whether this would work after such an extended period.
    OR
    1) uninstall SP2 and SP1 (I’m assuming your disk is the original RTM release version)
    2) rearm the system, and run a repair install using your disk and Key, then update it again
    OR
    1) back up the data
    2) wipe the drive
    3) Use the double-install method to reinstall Vista from your disk – this should work and allow activation, and you can the bring it back up to date, and recover your data and reinstall your programs.
    OR
    Purchase a Full Retail license for WIn7 Home Premium, and use that to upgrade the current installation.
     
     
    As you can see, all the alternatives are a fair amount of work/time, except for the last – and all carry risks of data corruption along the way.
    If you have proof of your qualifying license to hand, you *may* be able to persuade an activation operator to release an override code to allow activation of your current install – but I somehow doubt it.

    There is no COA sticker on the machine as all of the parts were ordered and built by my brother, it is not a retail stock computer. We definitely do not have a copy of XP for this computer, but I'm honestly not sure how we installed this upgrade version of Vista without it. I appreciate the information and possible fixes, however that is just too much work to put into an outdated computer, I'll just wait until I can afford a new one.

    That may be the best idea – but try the activation operator, as they may be able to help
    telephone activation (operator calls)
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit the Enter key

    follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.
