WGA WSUS and closed lan RRS feed

  • Question

  • Microsoft,

We have a closed lan with OEM XP Pro workstations on a W2K domain deployed from images between two ands six months old.  Masters were updated from windowsupdate website + sysprep + resealed without incident and the mini installer run without incident. All are fully patched from a local WSUS server including IE7 + WMP11   This month domain admins logging into workstations are getting greeted by memory dump errors implicating wga. Last month WMP11 deployment forced all users to a "windows must be validated" screen even if 1st run was done by an admin. What to do?

  • Microsoft,

No reply may be louder than silence.

A possible explanation may be because our master images are updated directly from the Microsoft update website - they include WGA. Because we use WSUS to keep the workstations on our closed lan patched, WGA never gets updated.

Since our masters have WGA and we use WSUS to push updates, but WSUS doesn't include WGA updates or fixes, is it possible our issues are do to that, or possible that today's memory dumps from some wga dll, may manifest to something else tomorow?

Besides phoning home, are there any timers built into WGA?
