OneCare and WHS Integration RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have both WHS and Live OneCare. They should be more tightly integrated. Right now, the only integration seems to be that Live OneCare knows to not worry about backups if you have WHS setup to handle backups. Some additional possibilities:

    • Allow WHS and Live OneCare to have the same number of computers - that is 10.
    • Allow WHS to server as the OneCare hub. Make it managed from the WHS console.
    • Allow OneCare to scan for viruses and tune up the WHS.

Microsoft should implement these in an open fashion so that users can select products other than OneCare to provide the similar service.

  • Both teams have been talking about this.  It requires OneCare to basically write their software for Windows Server 2003 with changes for Windows Home Server.  It's quite a task.

  • Good suggestions, but these would not be features that Windows Home Server would add. OneCare could, if they want, create an add-in for WHS taht would provide the requested functionality, as there's already a robust mechanism for WHS that allows the installation of software other than that which ships with the product. There are a fair number of add-ins already; some are written by enthusiasts, while others are from professional software houses. These add-ins include things like home automation, antivirus, additional media handling capabilities, etc.

  • It is great to know that they are talking about this. Of couse, once OneCare is updated for Server 2003, WHS will come out with version 2.0 based on Server 2008. Dependancies are a real bear. Thanks for the update. I really like both the OneCare ahd WHS products.
