Project Server 2010 Reporting Issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am having a heck of time trying to get Reporting Services working in my Project Server 2010.  I am following the instructions listed here (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662106.aspx) and am encountering 2 issues.

The first issue is that I am unable to add the ProjectReportViewer group to the Members box in the Secure Store Service settings configuration.  I can add the group to SQL through the Management Studio but I can't do even find them in SharePoint.  I know the group exists on the domain but SharePoint seems to not be able to see it. Ultimately to move to the next step I am forced to add the Farm Administrator to both the Target Application Administrator and Members sections.

The second issue, and I think it is related to the first issue, occurs when trying to open both Sample Reports and report Templates.  The Sample Reports give me the following error:

"An error occurred while accessing application id ProjectServerApplication from Secure Store Service. The following connections failed to refresh:

Project Server - Simple Projects List"

After this error, a blank report opens in the browser window.  I also receive the following error when trying to open a report Template:

"[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied."

Clicking OK opens the SQL server login window (within Excel 2010).  Simply clicking OK again (with the correct SQL server machine name and the Trusted Connections option checked) gives me this error message:

    "Connection failed:

    SQLState: '08001'

    SQL Server Error: 17

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied."

Deselecting the Trusted Connection option and trying to login using the Farm Administrator account gives me the same error message.

Both SQL Server 2008 R2 and SharePoint 2010 are installed on the same machine (which is running Server 2008 R2).  I have successfully been able to build and access the OLAP cubes.  I am just very confused and not sure where to go to fix this.  This forum has been a phenomenal resource and I have no doubt you guys will once again point me in the right direction.

I know this is a lot of information but thanks in advance for you help!

    -Bryan

  • Hi Bryan, I've faced more issues with the BI centre than anything else!  My gut feeling is that sharepoint MUST be able to see the reporting group within the secure store service, make sure you input it as doman\reportinggroupname.   I faced an issue today regarding Excel Services not being associated with the correct web application which I hadn't seen before!  The only way to troubleshoot this is to track the ULS logs.  Turn up the monitoring on Excel Services and Secure Store, and then open the log into Excel, filter for Secure Store and Excel Services within the Excel sheet and you'll see some more useful messages.

Another useful tip is to create another PS instance on the same machine, and see if the reporting works there.  If so, it might be worth recreating the BI centre (Brian Smith has a blog on this).  Let us know how you get on.

For your 2nd error, opening up in Excel directly does not use the Secure store service, so make sure that the user you are logged on with has the rights to access the Reporting DB directly to read from it.
