crm db update considerations RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello - I know MS says that backend updates to the CRM database are not supported.

I can see why this might be the case with primary CRM tables but what about custom fields which CRM stores in the custom base extension table?

Since these are custom fields, updating them through backend updates appears to be low risk.  Obviously the developer is responsible work any plugins, workflows, etc he has created that access the custom field.

But aside from that it seems safe to update these column values through a backend database script.  Do you agree or are there other aspects I'm not considering?

  • Some days ago a person asked a question in this forum because a workflow didn't start when a record is created by external system. After discovered that this external system create the record through sql, and not by web services.

This is only one of the possible situations you can see when using sql against a crm db.

CRM provides a good API to manage all the operations, and the time to write a simple/complex sql query isn't so different from writing a simple/complex app with sdk.

And using sql the fun will start if the company will switch to crm online :)
