The COA label looked legal, though it said GLC-00281, and made in USA.  The DVD's did not appear authentic and have a plastic skin over the copper region.  Is there a way to know whether this is really genuine (it certified as genuine via the microsoft website)?

Related question.  If the key were to someday stop working, what kind of key would be required to recover (OEM 1-pk vs transferable)?  Would it just be a new key or is there a chance the whole O/S would need to be reinstalled in order for a key to authorize, in which case what happens to existing licensed applications such as office, project and visio ... do they cause licensing problems as they were previously licensed against the other software and/or key?

  • The Product Key used in this copy of Windows 7 from an MSDN Subscription.

The licensing for MSDN Subscriptions is that only the owner of the MSDN Subscription that a Product Key originated from is allowed to use the Product Key. In addition, Product keys from an MSDN Subscription can not be resold separate from the full MSDN Subscription (meaning if someone wants to sell a Product Key originating from their own MSDN Subscription, they must sell the entire MSDN subscription, including all the keys that originated from that Subscription)

So, unless you are the owner of the MSDN Subscription that this key originated from, the key is not valid (Non-Genuine) for you to use. In that case, please see http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/a2444f34-0aff-4f29-a8ac-67e28b0c0285 for more information about these types of Blocked keys as well as options to get your money back.

    Thank you,

  • This is not what I wanted to hear.  I bought this software on Amazon.  I'm sure they will take care of the financial impact of this, but I would like to understand the potential collateral damage from this situation.  If I buy a key from Microsoft directly, can I simply enter that key and use my previously licensed products, or do I need to somehow retract the license for all my software before changing the key and reinstall it after changing the key?

By the way, if customers can get severely damaged by purchasing software from one of the most reputable companies in the world, with all the damage consequences being assigned to the purchaser worst case, why doesn't Microsoft end 3rd party sales?  The quality of the counterfeits is unreal.

You can simply enter a new Product Key as long as the key that you buy and the software you have installed are a match.

Example: Windows 7 Home software and a Windows 7 Home key.  Otherwise you would need to install the proper software to match the purchased key.
