Group Policy Deployment of Outlook Client RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to set up the installation for the Outlook client for a quiet Group Policy installation. A have run the command to create the msi and can add that to Group Policy.

    The thing I am not to sure about is how to pass in the configuration file to prevent it from prompting the users for settings?

  • Hi,

    When you publish an application by using GPO deployment, it is made for users to install by using Add or Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel.Assigned applications are installed when a user logs on to the domain.

    For creating a msi package you may refer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979249.aspx

  • John,

    If by settings you mean first-use configuration wizard, you can try editing Default_Client_Config.xml file in the package you're deploying.

    You can set default server and organization for users configure against and this file will dropped under program files upon install.

    In Default_Client_Config.xmlfile you need to uncomment Deployments section to look something like this:

    <Deployments>
     <!-- The settings below are for crm client setup -->
     <!-- <TargetDir>C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM</TargetDir> -->
     <!--  <InstallOfflineCapability>false</InstallOfflineCapability>  -->
     <!--  The settings below are for crm client configuration wizard  -->

     <Deployment>
      <DiscoveryUrl>http://CrmDiscoveryUrl</DiscoveryUrl>
      <Organizations>
       <Organization IsPrimary='true'>Organization1</Organization>
      </Organizations>
     </Deployment>

    </Deployments>

  • Hi Alex,

    Thanks for replying.

    That sounds like it should wourk for the configuration wizard. However, I am not sure how to perform a completly quiet installation of the CRM Client. What about the settings such as configuring Windows Updates? Is it possible to get the group policy to perform the initiall installation (before the config wizard) silently without prompting the user?

  • I'm not completely certain about quiet installation, but Jehanzeb's link seems to be pointing to correct guide.You can also see the command examples for CRM client here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979402.aspx

    All that seems to be needed is /Q flag to install client silently.

    setupclient /Q /l c:\clientinstalllog.txt INSTALLLEVEL=3 /targetdir "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM Client"

    For updates, if Microsoft Update is configured on machines, the client will automatically check for updates and install them at the end of setup process. (I believe this should also work if you have WSUS installed, then client will install updates from WSUS instead of MS Update).
