SOLVED - Change of drive in client PC has resulted in inability to connect to WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been successfully backing up my PC (Vista x64) to WHS for over a year. The drive that holds my data recently started to fail so I swapped it for a new one to which I copied all my data. The new drive is the same make and from the same range as the old one, but is twice the capacity. I also gave it the same drive letter assignment as the old one.

Now, whenever I try to either back it up or configure a backup I get the following message:

"This computer is not online or Windows Home Server cannot access the computer's hard drive. Please make sure the computer is powered on and connected to your home network"

The permissions on the disk are set appropriately. I've removed and re-installed the connector software to no effect. This one has really got me stumped.

  • Put your original drive back in the PC and boot up.

Then go into configure backups, and turn off backups for that drive.

Install your new drive, and then go back into configure backups, and re-enable backups for the drive.

This is the only way I've found to be able to reconfigure your backups when you're swapping a hard drive in a client machine.

  • Two possible solutions:

    1. Change the name of your computer and then either install the connector software again (from http://yourservername:55000) or run discovery.exe from C:\program files\windows home server\

    2. Remove the client from the WHS console (you will loose all backups) then then either install the connector software again (from http://yourservername:55000) or run discovery.exe from C:\program files\windows home server\

Well, I tried method 1. No joy, I'm still getting the same error message. I'm reluctant to attempt method 2 and leave myself without any viable backup.

I can't understand why changing my data drive has caused this problem. My system drive, which contains the Vista installation and all programs has not been touched.

    Brilliant. That fixed it.
