Windows 7 not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • My store bought copy of Windows 7 has suddenly become non genuine.  I've read several of the other fixes and nothing has worked.  I really don't want to do complete reinstall if I can keep from it.  I'm running a home built PC with an Intel core 2 quad cpu at 2.4 ghz and 2 gb of ram that has run very good up to this point.  I downloaded and ran the diagnostic tool and got this error "C:\windows\system32\slwga.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error,  Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support "

It did run though and here is what it reported.

  • Hello detroit442,

Sounds like your Norton is locked in a death match with some malware,  andthe collateral damage of that malware infection is causing systemic problems with your W7 installation.

I'd backup data and do a clean installation.

Glad you quoted the error message you got - it gives us a BIG clue as to what may be the problem!

    Try the following

    1) re-register the dll file
Open an elevated command prompt window
    at the prompt type
    REGSVR32   SLWGA.DLL
and hit the Enter key - you should get a message back - what is it?
If it says 'successful', reboot, and run the MGADiag again, and post back
If it says anything else, please look for the file (C:\windows\system32\slwga.dll), and its properties, and post back with those details.

    2) (if 1 fails) replace the dll file with a copy from another working Win7 system - you'll probably have to do this in Safe Mode - reboot, and see if that helps. If not, then repeat 1 above and see if that helps.

  • Thanks for the reply. I ran the  "REGSVR32   SLWGA.DLL" command and got this error.  "The module "SLWGA.DLL" may not (be) compatible with the version of Windows that you're running.  Check if the module is compatible with an x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit) version of the refsvr32.exe "

    Details on the SLWGA.DLL

    Location:        C:\Windows\System32

    Size:              13.5 KB (13,824 bytes)

Size on disk:   16.0 KB (16,384 bytes)

I also ran a malewarebytes and combofix to see if there were any nasties hiding.  I can post those reports if you like.  I do not have access to another machine running Win7.  The closest thing I have is a laptop with Vista.  By the way, I can only run this machine in safe mode.

    Thanks again for the help!

    Now he tells me! <g>

If the machine only runs in Safe Mode, then you have other problems besides Activation worries - Win 7 is designed to keep functioning in normal mode even if it shows as non-genuine.
What happens if you boot to Normal Mode?

  • Sorry I forgot to mention the safe mode, I'm new to Win 7.  I was using 2000 Pro before.  When the computer begins loading Windows I get an error message that says SLUI.EXE bad image either not designed to run on Windows etc. etc.  After I close that error window I get a grayish blue screen with the message at the lower right that says Windows 7 build 7600 not a genuine copy.  The hard drive activity light will stop blinking and nothing happens.  Not to muddy the water, but I did have a normal boot up and a Norton window popped up.  I already have Norton installed, but disabled with the msconfig command.  I declined the download and the machine worked.  I rebooted to test and got the same error and "not genuine" message.

    ***********************************************************************************************************************************************

Update, I let the blue/gray screen sit for a while and it finally loaded.  Very strange.

    Thanks!

Not strange, really - you said the magic word 'Norton'.
I suggest that you uninstall it completely, then run the Norton Removal Tool  - then install something a little less prone to trashing peoples' machines.
