  • Question

  • Hi,
I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 6400 from a company that went out of business.. I did a system restore to clean off all the information that was put on it by the company and when it re-booted , everything was lost. By this I mean all the program icons that were displayed on the screen are no longer there. Not even the start button normally displayed on the bottom left corner is missing. I called Dell about my situation and was told since the notebook was not sold to me, they cannot be of help. Is there anything I can purchase or do to recover the programs ?? Thanks in advance for your help and wish you all a blessed weekend.

  • Hello Anthony,

Your issue appears to be outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide some information which may help. There are available options which you may attempt. First you may request a Transfer of Ownership (United States Only) or  International Tag Transfer. Please visit the below links for explaination:

    http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/change_order/tag_transfer?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

    http://www.dell.com/content/topics/reftopic.aspx/pub/ccare/transfer_intl?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

The two links are actual transfer documents and can explain the proceedures. Once ownership is transferred you should be able to receive customer service.

Another options is review the Technical support link here:  http://search.dell.com/index.aspx?s=gen&c=us&l=en&ec=k&ira=False&cat=sup&advsrch=False  Some manufactures provide a hidden partion on their systems which will allow the user to perform a restoration. This will only work if the company, previous user didnt reformat or image the computer previously.

Another alternative may be to visit Dell Community Forums @ http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/. Maybe you can search for replace a lost Dell system restore disk.

Recovery CD’s are specific to your computer manufacturer and model. Please contact Dell Technical support for assistance once you are successful @ having the laptop transferred. They should be able to assist with your request and/or questions. Since the telephone number and web sites are not maintained by Microsoft we cannot make any warranty as to their validity.

Thank you and I hope this information will help you with getting your questions answered.

  • Hello jamezm,

The products supplied at the links you posted are not actual Dell Operating System Reinstallaton Discs.  They are generic boot/utility discs that will not actually install the operating system onto a computer.
