Office 2003 fails genuine validation after 2007 viewer installed RRS feed

  • Question

  • I run Office Professional Edition 2003 that came with my computer purchased new from Gateway.  Recently, I applied a bunch of updates to my Vista installation and Office and afterwards, I'm getting a message that office apps aren't genuine even though I'm absolutely certain they are.  When it goes to the genuine site, it appears to be looking at 2007, not 2003.  Help!

Here is the info from the Genuine Advantage diagnostic tool:

The mgadiag report is programmed to ignore Office application viewer installations, therefore your statement "When it goes to the genuine site, it appears to be looking at 2007, not 2003." does not apply.

The report says your Gateway MT6457 computer has a Volume Licensing edition of Office Professional Edition 2003 installed, and that a Blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) was used to install it.  A "blocked" VLK is one that was issued by Microsoft to a business, educational institution, or governmental agency for their exclusive use in accordance with a Volume Licensing Agreement.  (Note that such use does NOT allow the resale of such VLKs.)  However, because the VLK may have been reported lost, stolen, or compromised to the internet by the original keyholder, or because the Volume Licensing Agreement has expired, Microsoft has blocked the VLK from further use.

If your use of this Volume Licensing edition of Office Professional Edition 2003 is in association with an organization that has a Volume Licensing Agreement, then please contact the IT support staff of the organization for further assistance.

If you are an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing materials such as a VL disc, and you certainly should not have received a Blocked Product Key.

Your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand a full refund.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at www.microsoft.com/piracy.  Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you would like to participate in the Office Genuine Offer, please click the Learn More Online link being displayed on your screen by the OGA Notifier utility.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

  • Well that was pretty unhelpful but I guess its worth a try.  I will say once again - I've never re-installed Office and I've never had a problem before I installed some updates recently using Windows Update.  I guess that's what they pay you guys for is to point the finger at someone else.

  • My machine came with Office 2003 Professional.  I've been using this system for years without any issues with validation - this just happened after I applied some updates.  I've never taken the system in for repairs - ever - nor have I changed my installation other than doing things like downloading and using the Office 2007 viewer, etc.  Since I bought this system in 2007, I can't imagine Gateway or Sam's Club are going to be very interested in fixing the problem.

  • Hello Ozling,

The error 114 is reported when the Office Product key matches the Product key that Microsoft licensed to itself for use by it's own employees.  It leaked to the internet some time ago, at which point Microsoft blocked it from further use.

It is unlikely that Gateway included a copy of Office using a known pirated key. It may have been included by the retailer but it is also unlikely that Sam's Club would do that.  The most likely scenario is that the office was reinstall (for whatever reason) using this pirated key. Now since Office came with your PC from Gateway, then an Office reinstall disk and the Office Product key was also included with the PC.  I recommend uninstalling the current non-genuine, copy of Office and then install Office using the disk and key that came with the PC from Gateway.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

  • Hello Ozling,

You wrote, "I've been using this system for years without any issues with validation - this just happened after I applied some updates."

That is a very common response we see from posters in the forum.  Office 2003 and 2007 (and Windows XP for that matter) do not have an internal software protection system like Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Offfice 2010 do, so unless you installed a separate checking program (which you did when you installed KB949810) or unless you visited www.microsoft.com/genuine and clicked on the Validate Office button, you would not necessarily know that your installation of Office was nongenuine.

I have been participating in this forum for four years now so trust me when I tell you that you have nongenuine software installed.  It's not that it's fake or counterfeit, it's that you as a consumer should not have this type of license, and when consumers do have this type of license, it usually means they have been victimized somewhere along the line.

If your Gateway came with a full paid version of Office preinstalled (not to be confused with the 60-day Trial of Office that manufacturers have been installing for years now), then that extra purchase (it would have cost $250-$350 extra) from Gateway would have been accompanied by genuine Microsoft hologrammed installation discs for the edition of Office that was purchased with the computer, and the white paperboard sleeve they came in would have a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) affixed to the back of the sleeve.  Dig out your discs and have a look at them.  Do the discs have wording to the effect that they are Volume Licensing discs, or do they have wording to the effect that they are for distribution with a new PC only?
