Ive been using Vista since the week it was released. Ive had to reactivate this thing over the phone before when I changed my hardware if that helps. When I logged on today, it had product activation pop up, which has never happened before. It says its genuine, then opens the desktop, but it has the nagging little notice in the bottom right corner saying otherwise and a black background where my desktop image used to be.

  • Darin,

The issue seems to have corrected itsself sometime today before I even had a chance to do this, Ive been busy with a new Beta all day, so Im not really sure how or why it sorted itsself out but it did. Anyway, if it happens again or if theres any more weirdness with WGA ill be sure to let you know. Really had me scratching my head for a minute there but with so much work leading up to our next major release I couldnt really do anything but ask for help from you guys.

Thank you for you help though. You're the most helpful MS employee Ive ever run across. Ill be sure to give your supervisor a positive comment for you if I can figure out who they are.

  • Hello fadamsxii_35S,

It possible that Vista my be having a problem with it's Licensing Store.  Try the below steps that will recreate the Store.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS
