Office 2003 classified not genuine - have 3 user license for 2003 - can I re-install Oddice 2003 to make it genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was given a valid copy of Office 2003 a couple of years ago, and installed it on my Server PC running genuine XP Pro.  The person giving me their copy of Office 2003 uninstalled it and reinstalled Office 2007 in it's place.  On registering this copy it was classified as not genuine (see report from the MS validation tool (below)).  All my other software and OS are genuine, and certified as such.

About 12 months ago I purchased a 3 user license for Office 2003, and have 1 license unused.

    Question

Can I make the copy of Office 2003, currently classified "not genuine", to become genuine by reinstalling the new Office 2003 over it?

I need to be careful as MS Office Outlook has many contacts and E-mails I do not wsh to loose.

  • Hello JohnClake1943,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 114 Blocked VLK 2
    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0
    Signed By: Microsoft
    Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1

Regarding Office, the report says you have a Blocked VLK, which means that (a) your computer has a Volume Licensing edition of Office Professional Edition 2003 installed, and that (b) a Blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) was used to install it.  A "blocked" VLK is one that was issued by Microsoft to a business, educational institution, or governmental agency for their exclusive use in accordance with a Volume Licensing Agreement.  (Note that such use does NOT allow the resale of such VLKs.)  However, because the VLK may have been reported lost, stolen, or compromised to the internet by the original keyholder, or because the Volume Licensing Agreement has expired, Microsoft has blocked the VLK from further use.

The person who gave you the current installation of Office Professional 2003 gave you nongenuine software.

Depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you think that you qualify for the Genuine Office Offer, apply for the Offer thru the Learn More Online link that the OGA Notifier is displaying.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

I understand your intent to Get Genuine by replacing this nongenuine installation of Office with another license that you understand is a valid license.  However, without the details of what edition of Office 2003 you plan to install, I cannot say for sure if what you want to do will work.

I can tell you that I am aware of only one edition of Office 2003 that was licensed for the three installations that you mentioned, and that edition was called Office 2003 Student and Teacher and it was licensed similarly to how Office Home and Student 2007 is licensed---members of the same household can install and activate the product on up to three household computers.  The product is intended for use in homes and is not licensed for use in a commercial, revenue-generating setting, so it cannot be used in the  business, governmental, or nonprofit sectors.

What edition of Office 2003 do you plan to install?  Is this license installed on any other computer?  If so, you can check its status by running the mgadiag utility on that computer and posting the report.
