CRM 4.0 (32) to CRM 5.0 / 2011 (64) share my findings/questions RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

just finish the upgrade on our DEV system for CRM 4.0 to 5.0 and would like to share my findings/questions with you.
I followed the 8 steps from here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg554767.aspx which are way too high level.

    Anyways, here my steps.

DEV CRM 4.0 Rollup 17 single server, one Organization to new CRM 5.0 two boxes)

    - Install new CRM 5.0 (two box all 2008 R2, 1x CRM, 1x SQL & Reporting)
-- During install select: Create a new deployment
-- Select same OU in active directory as 4.0
-- As I couldn't skip the create organization wizard in the install wizard I enter our Organization settings. (recommend to call it ABCdummy to not confuse you with the real Organization)
    - in CRM 5.0 drop just created Organization ABCdummy
    - in CRM 5.0 DB drop ABCdummy
    - CRM 4.0 disable ABC organization, stop CRM 4.0 IIS
    - Backup CRM 4 DB "ABC_MSCRM" to CRM 5 DB
    - Start 5.0 deployment manager to import ABC_MSCRM.

This link is helpful for security for each service account and install account! http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg554723.aspx

Findings: the new install creates new groups in AD (beside the UserGroup)

    Questions:
    - Is it correct to select "Create a new deployment" in CRM 5.0 installer?
    - Is it correct to select same OU as CRM 4.0 in CRM 5.0 installer?

I don't bother with finding about the general 5.0 install and issues here as my questions here are only related to the upgrade selections.

    Thanks

    Tilo

  • Hi,

If you are upgrading the CRM 4.0 to CRM 2011 in same machine then it will ask you directly for upgrade the CRM.

If you are installing CRM 2011 in new server then you need to Select Create a new Deployment as CRM 4.0 MSCRM_CONFIG cannot be used for CRM 2011.

If you are using the same OU for CRM 2011 then it doesnt matter, because CRM 2011 will create new server groups with new GUID's.

You can check the GUID's in organization database from MSCRM_CONFIG.

  • Nothing wrong with creating a new deployment. I did the same, otherwise it is a bit of more work if your crm 4.0 environment using 32 bit machines. for e.g. like moving crm 4 deployment to 64 bit machine to do a in place upgrade.

    I like the new deployment.

What you did will work but I may choose a new OU like CRM2011. then you won't have same name ad groups in the OU.

As I said before it will work but I still have sepearte OU.

    I hope this helps.
