Victim of software couterfeit error after Windows 7 OEM reinstall RRS feed

  • Help! My Dell Inspiron 15 pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Edition that I've had for 2 years all of a sudden is giving me an error that my copy of Windows is not genuine. Here is the backstory:

    About a month and a half ago I reformatted my computer and reinstalled Windows. I was careful to save all my data and keep all my product keys. I used the OEM CD Key and matching product ID during the install and everything worked perfectly. Now, all of a sudden, when my computer rebooted I am getting an error that my copy of Windows is not genuine. Here is the diagnostics report.

  • Problem resolved by checking related posts. For some reason the OEM SLP was compromised, probably due to M$ blacklisting the Dell default OEM. However, my Certificate of Authentication (COA) product key on the back of my computer worked.

    To fix the issue, you will need to change out the OEM SLP key with the COA SLP key.  The normal way to do this is to click the ‘Start’ button, right-click ‘Computer’, select ‘Properties’ and then click ‘Change Product Key’ (located in the lower right-hand side of the window). Enter the COA SLP key and follow the instructions in the Change Product Key Wizard.

     Alternate steps to change the product key

    1)    Click the Start button

    2)    Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    3)    Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

  • Your solution is the correct one - but the reasoning is slightly faulty :)

    All OEM_SLP Keys are blocked from activation at the MS servers - by design.

    They are designed to self-activate in conjunction with data both from the computers BIOS and from the manufacturer's Recovery media.

    In your case, you appear to have used retail media for the reinstall- which does not contain the manufacturer's data, and so teh OEM_SLP Key cannot self-activate, and attempts to activate at the MS servers will meet with a 'blocked key' response.

    As you discovered, the solution is to change teh Key to the one on the COA sticker, and activate that.
