All but one client pc backs up. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently added a new pc to my home server. It fails about 80% through the backup process.  I get the following message in Details: D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\Data.4096.18.dat
    Write file
    1117.
Everything else is working fine.  I have two other client PCs that backup just fine.  I have tried a cleanup--no luck there.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  • I found my problem.   I ran chkdsk as was suggested.  There were no errors.  So, I used the console to remove the only external drive in use; it transferred its data to one of my two internal drives.  I then tried and successed in doing manual backups.
I was disappointed that no one provided me with this solution--or any other during the last two days.

I have another question:  I have two internal drives in use at the moment.  I have two other external hard disk drives connected to my WHS.  They are listed under "Server Backup Hard Drives.  Neither of these two drives appears to be in use.  How do I add one to the storage pool?  Do I remove it and then install it as a storage hard drive?  Or will WHS use it automatically, when it becomes necessary?

I thank you in advance for your support.

  • Thank you for your reply and instructions.  I have done just as you directed me.  I hope not to have any more problems.  In my opinion, WHS appears to be quite fragile.  (It's not responsible for a defective HDD, of course.)  Again, I appreciate your quick attention.

You should start by running chkdsk /r on each drive in your client that doesn't back up.

  • Given that you're getting an error thrown for a file on your server, I would rather see you run chkdsk on all the drives in that, rather than your client. Not that running chkdsk on your client is likely to hurt anything...

  • I ran chkdsk to no avail.

  • Do you want me to run chkdsk on both drives of my new pc, or do you wnt me to run chkdsk on all drives on the server and my other PCs?  The other PCs are backed up fine by the server, if that helps.

  • All the drives in your server, please. There's probably no need to run chkdsk on any of your client PCs.

  • Excuse my ignorance, but if the server is backing up two other PCs flawlessly is there still a need to check its HDDs?

  • Your server is reporting an error for a file that's stored on your server, and that's part of the backup database, so yes, you should run chkdsk on all the drives in your server.

  • Chkdsk found no problems.  I tried to do a manual backup and it got to about 62% when it failed.  The dialog box read there may be a problem with connector.  What should I do next?  I appreciate your help.

  • WHS will not use it automatically unless it is part of the storage pool. So go ahead and do that, it should work (note, you will lose any data on the external drives you've added)
