Custom attribute values not being returned in search results RRS feed

  • Does the standard search bar only search first name / last name? If so, is there a way to expand the fields it includes in its search?

    I have a custom attribute, ID#, published on the Contact record, that is the value the user will be using to search for contacts in CRM 4. In the attributes properties, I have it set to be searchable.

    At this point, when the ID number is entered into the default search box from the Contact record default view, the matching record is not returned. Wildcard searching does not return anything either.

    I understand that the custom attribute shows up and is searchble with Advanced Find, but I'd like to avoid forcing the user to go down that path, if possible. My next best option was to set up a saved view in advanced find and if this is the best that can be done, does anyone know how to make the saved view the default option?
