Home Server sign in at startup

Question
-
Is there any way I can configure the server to sign on auto without having to use CNTRL,ALT,DELETE and then putting in my password. I would like to be able to power it on and off when needed and not need a monitor and mouse to sign it on. I would just like to hit the power button and have it automatically sign on. Can I sign on the server itself on from a connected PC once I power on the server?Friday, January 15, 2010 1:57 AM

For auto login:
WHS/2003: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/324737
But do not bother. You do not need to do this to log-in from a connected PC. It maybe useful if you had a monitor and keyboard connected, but, this is not a supported way to use WHS.- Edited by working1 Friday, January 15, 2010 2:27 AM typo

I understand once the server is signed on I can access it from a connected PC. What I want to know is do I always need to have a monitor and mouse connected to the server to sign it on if I turn it on when , For example I go on vacation for 2 weeks and when I return home I power on the server I will need to sign on with the cntrl, alt, del or is there some automated way I can set it to log on auto once I power up the server. This way I do not need the monitor, mouse and keyboard to sign it on.Friday, January 15, 2010 1:51 PM

As working1 said, there's no need to log in to the server automatically. Everything should work fine without any user being logged in at all.

You can also connect to shared folders, if nobody is logged in locally on the server. That is why it is a server.
The only time it is necessary to login locally, is for serious troubleshooting. Besides that all interaction should be performed from a client PC using the WHS Console.

I understand what you are conveying. When you first turn on the server it must be logged on by apassword. If this is not done you can not gain remote access from a connected PC. Can I just turn on the sever without logging it on and perform a backup.Friday, January 15, 2010 4:31 PM

This is not true. Your server is fully functional within (usually) a couple of minutes of turning it on. Once it's finished booting, you can log in locally if you want, or through remote desktop (though neither is supported) but there's no requirement that you do so for any of the built-in functionality. If you've installed additional desktop software that needs to be started, that's a different question...
