disk defragment error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been trying to rid my computer of what I think was spy ware.  I installed the trial version of windows live one care which has restored my internet access (mozilla runs super slow and Internet explorer will still not allow me to access the internet).  I've been trying to run the Tune Up device in windows live one care but it will not defragment the drives.  I can defragment my D drive with my control panel but my C drive will not even start to defragment.  I've also tried defragmenting my C drive in safe mode but it would not let me.  Please help, not sure what to try next.  Will defragmenting even speed up my internet access?  is there anything else I should be doing?

  • There are a lot of possible reasons why the disk defragmenter might fail, and the first thing to do would be to check the disk for errors. If I recall correctly, older versions of the defragmenter actually ran Scandisk before starting the defragmentation process in order to prevent any potential problems caused by disk errors.

Since it’s quite possible in this case that malware is the source of the trouble with both the defragmenter, and Internet Explorer, it might be wise to contact OneCare Support for help: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2421771&SiteID=2

  • Had same problem, Disk Defragmenter won't run on C drive.  I had some Vundo trojan and Netsky Q worm trojan, on my computer that I took care off, and got rid of WudfPf and WudfRd from the system32/drivers folder, and still no luck.  Would like a solution.  TIA.
