Windows 7 Ultimate suddenly "Not Genuine" after crash RRS feed

  • Question

  • My PC crashed (I think the crash might have been linked to my graphics card as it's been having issues but I'm not positive). When it restarted, it told me that my copy of Window 7 Ultimate was "not genuine". I've never had this problem before then and I'm not sure what happened. This is a custom built PC if that helps at all.

  • your windows is counterfeit.

you are using an asus OEM SLP key on a retail motherboard. that simply won't work.

you have an activation exploit called RemoveWat installed.

you will have to purchase and install genuine windows.

  • Great, looks like I need to have a talk with the person who built my PC for me. I take it the exploit is the reason it was being read as genuine up until this point.

    Thanks

  • If you paid someone to build a computer for you and they installed a counterfeit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, they committed fraud.  Either demand a refund for the cost of a genuine copy of Windows 7 Ultimate or let the builder know you intended to contact the local law enforcement agency and file fraud charges against them.

  • I didn't pay them, it was a friend who was doing me a favor. I'm just disappointed if they intentionally used a counterfeit copy as I thought they had more integrity than that.

On the subject of installing a genuine copy, is there any way for someone with only a modest amount of technical knowledge (like me) to do that without losing/having to reinstall everything on my computer? I just started a new semester at school and I really don't have the time to go through that all over again right now.

Thanks for all of your help.

  • Unfortunately, you would need to purchase a genuine "full version" edition of Windows 7, reformat the hard drive, then install Windows 7.
