Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Licensing situation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our parish office recently purchased 2 new computers, 1 for the parish secretary and the other for the bulletin editor.   New Microsoft Office Professional 2007 was purchased through eBay which was for 2 PCs.  Once installed Microsoft Office was working properly.  Unfortunately, the bulletin editor (a novice at computer software) loaded the software on her home computer (which was the third computer), and following that our Microsoft Office software now opens stating that it is not "genuine."  When it was brought to the bulletin editor's attention, she immediately uninstalled the software from her home computer, (purchased her own package), yet our parish office software is still saying it is not genuine.  Please tell us what can be done about this.  The Office 2007 was new and licensed for two computers only, which is the case now.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hello stpeter155,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
    Office Status: 108 Invalid VLK
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 - 108 Invalid VLK

    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0

Your Dell Vostro computer's current installation of Office Professional Plus 2007 is a Volume Licensing installation, and the installation was done with an Invalid Volume Licensing Product Key (VLK).

Invalid VLK means that the product key used to install Office Professional Plus 2007 was never a genuine product key issued by Microsoft.  This invalid key was instead made by a pirating program known as a Key generator, or keygen for short.

The extra installation on the person's home computer would have nothing to do with the software installation being nongenuine, as it was never a genuine copy of Office to begin with.

If you are an individual consumer and purchased this copy of Office Professional Plus 2007 from a seller, then you should not have been sold Volume Licensing software and should certainly not have been given this invalid key by the seller.  Your options at this point include returning to the seller to demand the genuine Microsoft Office that you paid for; to return the software to the seller for a refund; or to read the FAQ to see if you qualify for participation in the Office Genuine Offer for discounted or complimentary replacement of your nongenuine Office:

It seems that a favorite tactic of software counterfeiters is to sell genuine-looking retail packages for Office Professional 2007 that have counterfeit discs inside that actually install a nonegenuine copy of Office Professional Plus 2007, an edition of Office that is a volume licensing product only.  Please visit www.howtotell.com to see samples of genuine Office software and samples of counterfeit copies of Office.  The online auction sites seem to be overrun with this stuff.

If you would like to participate in the Office Genuine Offer, please follow the prompts that the Notifier Utility is displaying to "Learn More Online."

  • Hello stpeter155,

The Non-Genuine notice was not caused by the Bulletin Editor installing the Office at home. Microsoft doesn't monitor the number of installs quite that closely and it definetly doesn't react that quickly.

My feeling is that the Office was Non-Genuine to begin with and (at about the same time as Bulletin Editor installed the software at home) the computer received and installed the Microsoft Update 'Office Notifier' . Office, itself, doesn't have any Anti-piracy system, so the The purpose of the Office Notifier is to check and inform the user if thier Office is non-Genuine.

You have few couses of Action that I would recommend.

    a) Contact the eBay seller and work out a return of the Office software. You may have to get eBay or Paypal involved to force the refund. Note: In my experience, it is very rare to find a Genuine copy of Office or Windows for sale on any auction sites.  Microsoft tries it's best to have those bogus software auctions removed, but it's a bit like the game Whack-a-Mole, they just keep coming back.

    b) If you would first like confirmation of the Non-Genuine status of your Office software before contacting the eBay seller, download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the Report into a reply message in this thread.

One of the Moderators or I, will look at the report and explain the reason for the Non-genuine message.  Most likely, the key that came with the software is a Volume License Key (VLK) that is either a key that was leaked from Microsoft (it was to be used by Microsoft employees, but somehow got out on the internet), a key Blocked By Microsoft (because the owner reported that the key has been leaked, lost or stolen) or a key that was created using a piracy program called a Key Generator (KeyGen) (in other words, the key wasn't created or released by Microsoft).

Sorry for the bad new, but be sure to let the Bulletin Editor off the hook, it wasn't he's/her fault,
    Darin MS
