dat file issue and possible feature for next version of SyncToy RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hello,

For the occasion of changes the security policy on the file servers in my company, SyncToy becomes unusable.
The reason is very simple: Synctoy uses DAT files on each sides of the folders pair. When the root directory of a synchronised folder is read only (but not its subfolders), Synctoy is not able to perform the synchronization.
It could be usefull to have the possibility to relocate the DAT file, for example in a special hidden directory of the synchronized root directory, and specify this relocation in the options of the pair.

  • Hi math,
For your problem, are you sure it caused by add read-only attribute to the left/right root folders?
I did a few try on vista/xp/win7/win2k3, did not get your problem reproed.

    Steps:

    1)    Create a folder pairs with action as synchronize, left folder is d:\test\lf, right folder is d:test\rf

    2)    Change folder lf as read-only, change folder rf as read-only too.

    3)    Create files on each side, run preview and sync, no error and result is correct

    4)    Create new files on each side, delete one file on left side.

    5)    Change [GUID].dat files as read-only in left folder and right folder, run preview and sync, no error and result is correct too.

    Thanks,

  • And why SyncToy uses DAT files? What are they for? Why are they encrypted? Microsoft security reasons?
