I do not have a Vista installation disc, but a Vist Upgrade disc; this seems to have save a winload error at start up.  But I now have what appears to be a completely "new" installation.  I am prompted to activate but the code I get from my system information is rejected...won't accept certain characters.  How can I acctivate?

  • Hello PBart9335,

The Product Key currently being used in Vista is the Default "Keyless Install" key. Vista is allowed to be installed without a Product key, but Vista still needs a Product Key, so it will use it's own Default Key (also known as the Keyless Install key). This key allows the user to use Vista for 30 days before they need to enter a Valid product key.

What I believe may have heppened, is that when you attempted to Upgrade to Vista, you did a clean install instead of an upgrade install. Since the Product Key that came with your Upgrade disk is for Upgrade installs, only, it would not be accepted in a clean install so Vista used it's own default (keyless install) key.

I suggest going to http://support.microsoft.com and contact Vista support. Help with installing Windows (and other Microsoft products) is supported at No Cost (you also get a free support period when you purchase Retail Windows)  The Vista Support person can assist you in installing that Upgrade copy of Vista, correctly, so that your Upgrade Product key will work.

    Thank you,
