Windows 7 not genuine error message after hard drive upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I recently upgraded my hard drive (and cloned old one) and now I am getting error message that my Window 7 is not genuine. I tried to validate it online, but it did not work. I saw on this forum that it might be issues with Inter Rapid Storage technology, unfortunately link to download did not work

Here is output of Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool:

  • Hmm- the pattern of errors is definitely different to the 'usual cases' we see here. All the referenced files appear to be missing their signatures - which is pretty much impossible, so it probably means that the internal Certificates that register the files have been uninstalled.

I rather think that a repair install is going to be necessary - you may be able to download the necessary ISO file to create a new install disk from here...

  • This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • I did you as you suggested and even rebooted 3 times (just in case). I think it looks good.

  • Nah :( it still looks the same.

    Try this...

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

    NET STOP CRYPTSVC
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
    NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

Note that this may delete your Update History - but all updates will remain installed, and can be viewed in the Installed Updates listing.

  • Still no change :(

We'll have to see if there's an underlying file problem...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

     CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size  of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally  (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your OneDrive or DropBox Public folder, and post a link - also post a new MGADiag report.

  • Ok, I did as you said. Here is a link to CBS.log file:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/jvlqkl5lz6it4go/CBS.log?dl=0

Also SFC scan generated the following message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log"

    Here MGADiag output:

  • The SFC seems to have done some work - but it's not really telling me what! :(

I think I need to have an MGADiag using the later version of the tool - I think I'm missing a vital piece of data somewhere.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

     Once saved, run the tool.

Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.x

      - in your own thread, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • Compute came with Vista pre-installed, I upgraded to Win 7 in 2012. I am trying to locate the disk, but there is chance that I lost it while moving.

  • Thank you for all the help Noel!

If I understand correctly in order to do repair install I have to locate my original installation DVD and get 25-character product key from it?

Also will I repair install preserve all my data (files and programs) on the disk?

    • Edited by august_month Tuesday, June 21, 2016 9:40 AM additional question

  • The Product Key is NOT on the disk - it is either on a COA sticker or on a Proof of License card which came inside the package with your disk.

A repair install should leave all your programs and data intact - but it's always a good idea to back up to external media first!

Look here for the best set of instructions I know for a repair install... http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R

  • I followed your link to download windows, but got the following error message:

    Error

The product key you've entered appears to be for software which was licensed through an Enterprise Agreement. Please contact the Volume Licensing Service Center for software recovery options or visit the Volume Licensing Home Page for more information on Enterprise Agreements.

I got my windows installation DVD while in school (freew windows for students). Should I go back to my school  Volume Licensing Service Center for recover options?

Also, my original installation DVD is for Windows 7 Ultimate but without SP1 and it says it is upgrade (pre-existing os license required). This is actually how I used it, I upgraded from Windows Vista.

  • Hmm - I know the download site can be buggy :( - but I've not heard of it giving that response before!

Are you usre you entered the correct Key, from the Ultimate box, ending HDPVJ ??

  • Yeap, I am confident I entered correct number. I did it multiple times. It does end on HDPVJ. There is no actually ultimate box. Installation DVD came in small envelope with product sticker on the back. I have multiple envelopes like this for different product (MS Office). This is how the University was distributing it. I actually called university IT and asked about it, and they said that they provide support only to student, kind of non-sense. I am not sure how to reach licensing office and ask them directly.

It looks like the only option is to either to stay with Win 7, since computer is old or buy Win 10 license.

Thank you, Noel. I think we tried everything.

  • In that case I can only think that it's an MSDN-type Key, and that the allowed number of activations has been exceeded, or the subscription has expired, resulting in the invalidation of the Key.

Your only choice is to purchase a full license for Windows, of whichever version/edition you need.

  • Sorry for late response. I finally purchased Win 10 license. I tried to download Win 10, but it only starts download and does nothing. It does not look like it is working. I tried to use Win update in control center, but it says service is disable and suggests restarting computer. I did restart, but it did not help. It is possible to download Win 10 DVD?

Update: I manually checked that both services are running (Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service)

I also downloaded and ran program from the link:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2730071

After executing it, I got the following message:

Service registration is missing or corrupt: fixed

    Problems installing recent updates: fixed

Problems installing recent updates: not fixed

    Kind of contradictory

    Another Update:

The following steps did not help either:

    • Net stop wuauserv press [ENTER]
    • cd %systemroot% press [ENTER]
    • Ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old press [ENTER]
    • Net start wuauserv press [ENTER]

  • I bought it through my employer. So I essentially bought a key. The instruction the came with it says that I need to download Windows 10 as free upgrade (this option is gone from computer now) and once installation is complete enter supplied key to activate. For earlier versions of Windows (Vista and XP) it suggests I download disk image from link, but warns that data might be lost in installation process. I want to avoid clean install, if possible.

  • If the Key is legit, you should be able to download from MS - from here...

    Upgrade went well.

Once again thank you for your patience and thoughtfulness. I was going to mark this as the answer, but it looks like somebody already has done it for me.

  • Just one final questions. It looks like all my trouble started after I cloned disk with Macrium Reflect. Would you recommend any other software for disk cloning?
    Wednesday, August 10, 2016 1:21 AM
  • Macrium reflect is as good as any other I know - they all can cause a similar error, but it's usually easy enough to fix by reinstalling the HD drivers properly. Sometimes it just doesn't seem to take, for unknown reasons :(
