  • Need of SeriousHelp,

Right now, your Toshiba Satellite 2805 computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 8), and that installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are blocked by Microsoft at the request of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired.  Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misuse, ie, more installations of XP using that key than authorized.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.  Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

More bad news:  please note that the mgadiag utility is identifying your installation of Office XP Pro w/Front Page as being Nongenuine (Office Status:  114 means nongenuine).  If this comes as a surprise to you, please return to the place of purchase and demand either genuine Office software or a refund.  In any case, please uninstall the nongenuine Office XP Pro w/Front Page installation from your computer.

Luckily, the solution to your problem is simple.  Use the recovery solution supplied with the computer (often this will be one or more Recovery CDs/DVDs, or perhaps a hidden recovery partition accessed at startup using a special keystroke combination) by Toshiba to replace the nongenuine volume installation of XP Pro with the genuine OEM installation of Windows.  The Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the computer will tell you which edition of XP came with the computer.  It's likely your computer did not come from Toshiba with XP Pro, but probably XP Home or Media Center.  If it did come with XP Pro, you can use the Key Updater Utility to "genuine-ize" your installation of XP Pro.  If you do not have the originally supplied Recovery solution, please contact Toshiba customer service or tech support to inquire about purchasing replacement Recovery CDs/DVDs.

Be sure to back up and offload your data before you do this because typically the recovery process destroys all data on the hard disk.

We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is with Windows XP Professional and why it is not passing validation.  Unfortunately, the product key used to install the operating system is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VL editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and versions of MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of Windows XP Pro is an unauthorized installation. In any case, please uninstall the non-genuine installation of the operating system to alleviate any complications which may arise from the non-genuine status of your system. As a customer there are options available to you for a resolution. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report a piracy case who have become a victim to assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs. We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum. We have a 3rd party registered Cryptography lab who evaluates EVERY (really!) submission for the High-Quality Counterfeit replacement program - as they have a pre-determined subset of items they look for.

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Demand they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy which was originally paid for. In any case, please uninstall the non-genuine installation to alleviate any complications.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation or reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

    Thank you

But despite validating and re-validating my windows and IE, any time I try to open WMP 11, it alsways asks me to validate!

IE 7.0 does work, so something about validation does work...

    Any help much appreciated!

  • Sorry to interrupt the string.  I have a problem similar to the startup message, and could not think of a graceful/polite entrance.

    I have an HP/Compaq Presario.

Six months back, Windows Auto Update started running and failing over and over. I tried to run it manually, and got the Genuine Advantage Validation tool failure message.  So, I disabled it.  Six month later, I see the problem has not gone away, either for me, or for Forum participants.

Any hope in sight?  I'd sure like to get ecurity updates again

    Thanks

  • MSvictim,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of  Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

  • Dan;

Thank you for the reply.  I followed your first step.  I wish I had that advice a lot earlier - perhaps as an auto default from the automatic validation (which merely hangs).  After running linkid=52012, I read the results in the light of postings on this forum and others.

As it turns out, my copy of MS Office2003 gave Office Status: 108 Invalid VLK.

I bought this software a year ago for $170 plus shipping from an E-Bay Seller: "chicagocomputerbroker at hotmail dot com" (which resolved to "Irish5025 at hotmail dot com").  It was represented as "NEW Microsoft Office 2003 Professional Full Version", and promised a Hologram and Key.  All was delivered as promised, and looked good, but the Office Status above identifies the software as Bogus.

Of course, E-Bay refuses to honor its fraud rebate policy, as I waited too long to report it (somewhere, an E-Bay exec deserves to rot in you know where for her/his deadline policies). I suspect that I'll get the same runaround from PayPal - as they are in the same boat going across the river Styx to the warm place.  And though I'll see if it qualifies for Microsoft "high quality" bogus software compensation, I don't really expect to get anything.

Moral - Don't buy software on E-Bay.  If you do, kiss your bucks good bye.  But if you do, somehow get to the link you provided to me in your message.  Then if you got that far, report promptly to E-Bay and PayPal - as their deadlines are pretty arbitrary, designed to protect their bucks, not to help you, the customer.

Tell all your friends, don't buy software on E-Bay. You may end up as a victim of fraud.

  • The form didn't make it easy, but I did submit a fraud report.  I'll get a new copy and start over.  Since mine is a working (though not "validate-able") copy, I wonder if anyone on th forum knows how to reload with minimal loss and pain - preferably just from the point of a new number?????

    Thanks,
