Vista validation error: 0xC004F061 (upgrade vs clean install) RRS feed

  • General discussion

I received this error when trying to activate my copy of Windows Vista (Business ed.) After some research, I realized that I have an "upgrade" key, but performed a clean install. For prior versions of Windows, an upgrade license was permitted if the installer could provide original media. That has now been tightened, and installation over an old version is now required.

My feedback is this: This is inconvenient and risky. I want to test Vista separately, without taking a chance on corrupting my working instance of WinXP. I believe a clean install from an upgrade licence should be allowed, provided the user can provide sufficient proof of a valid license.
