Genuine Win XP Pro CD instead of WGA Kit ? RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I just want to know whether I have a choice of over installing a new Genuine XP Pro CD (which I already have) over the present non-genuine copy, instead of going for a WGA kit to fix the key.

By the way, it has been over a month since I got the notice for the first time (!), am I running out of time to validate it? I mean will my computer be freezed (or what so ever) in a particular period of time?

If yes, please advise ASAP !

Yes, you're certainly welcome to install a genuine copy of XP Professional on top of the non-genuine copy if you wish to. We have the WGA Kit online for users who wish to utilize an online purchase point rather than buying in-store locally.

  • k1saturn,

before you do any reinstalling, could you do this:

    1. Download and run the WGA Diagnostic Tool  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

    2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard". Paste the results into your forum response.

    That would help greatly,

    Thanks

  • K1,

As long as the XP Pro you have is (1) a genuine full retail CD and (2) is not presently activated on any other computer, you will be able to do a repair reinstallation and convert your nongenuine XP Pro to this genuine XP Pro.

While repair reinstallations are designed to preserve user data in the My Docuemnts folder and installed programs, nevertheless it is a wise precaution to back up any data that you cannot afford to lose.

Here is a MS KB article with instructions:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us
