How Does Mesh Differ From Windows Live Sync? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I already use WL Sync. Why would I want to use this instead?

  • There are actually two differences:
    1. Live Sync is only P2P sync. Live Mesh includes the Live Desktop for cloud storage
    2. Remote Desktop via Live Sync requires that the host PC support Remote Desktop, so Home editions can't be connected to remotely. Live Mesh uses its own technology for Remote Desktop.

We have not seen any official word, but rumor suggests that the two will merge into one offering later this year.

The biggest reason is Mesh gives you the ability to logon to other computers in your network from whichever computer you are using.  For example...  There are 3 computers in my house in 2 different rooms, my desktop, my laptop and my wife's desktop.  There are several programs on her computer that I don't have on mine.  For instance, to use microsoft money on her machine, I log onto her computer from my desktop or laptop and can use that program. That alone is reason enough for me to use live mesh.

  • Would you delete Live Sync then before installing Mesh?

    Good question Sdrum!
Here's a good article explaining the differences:

Personally I would like to see an integration of all three into one system to avoid confusing users. QED your question.
And I would like to see a better (more intuitive) interface for Windows Live. The current interface is too confusing.

As for uninstalling WL sync. Yes, it would be better, to avoid sync'ing through two systems.

    My $0,02.

You can currently run both, but do not point them to the same folder for sync purposes.
For example, you could sync \Pictures using Live Sync and \Documents with Live Mesh. There's really no good reason to that, though, that I can think of. I do it for testing and support purposes. ;-)
