The one you need more than anything else is the SP2 update - which in your case means that you first have to install SP1.Download it from here, and see if it installs (I have my doubts, but you'll be able to use it later)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=30
You may as well also download the SP2 installer for later use... http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=16468
If it doesn't install, it would probably be best to repost in a more appropriate forum - either of the following would be a good start...
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update
http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/ (despite the name, it does also deal with x86 installs)
You'll need to provide the error code produced when installing the SP, and also check for forum rules/suggestions on posting supporting data.

Thank you for your reply, Noel.
One of the symptoms of this particular "validation" error is I cannot access Control Panel. As I almost immediately discovered, the "printer" functions are also disabled. As I discovered after trying to go through the checklist your provided, the "update windows" access from the start menu has also been disabled.
I removed the AVG anti-virus by a "remover" downloaded from their site. I am at a loss as to how to make sure I have all the updates fro Vista without access to either the "windows updates" or "control panel" and any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks.
