Windows 7 64-bit MAK Keeps Popping up Windows is not Genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a user who keeps getting the "Windows is not Genuine" popup on his Laptop. I have verified with our partner that the MAK key he is using is valid. If I re-enter the MAK key the laptop will activate, have tried both online and the automated phone activated, and it will be fine for 7-8 hours before popping up again. Report:

  • Good - that's got rid of one error, at least.

    The remaining one is

    HealthStatus Bitmask Output:
    Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\sppcomapi.dll|sppcomapi.dll.mui

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • ...and here's the second set, which requires a different procedure....

(it may be a while before the file finishes uploading - it's rather large!)

    I've uploaded a file - mrmab.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

    This should create a folder
    C:\mrmab

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

    Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

    At the prompt type

    DIR C:\mrmab

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

    DIR D:\mrmab

    or

    DIR E:\mrmab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\mrmab  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type

    EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link.

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

  • I've uploaded two files (mrmac.zip and mrmad.zip) to my Skydrive at  Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save them

Right-click on the mrmac.zip file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

    This should create a folder
    C:\mrmac

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print
    these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start
tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which
should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

    Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

    At the prompt type

    DIR C:\mrmac

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

    DIR D:\mrmac

    or

    DIR E:\mrmac

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\mrmac  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type

    EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Right-click on the mrmad.zip file, and select Extract all…

Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder  mrmad in the same place.

Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content  to the folder

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

(The current MGADiag is fine - but Windows Update won't work until these files are fixed)

  • This could be interesting!

    Close all open windows.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and type the following command

    wusa /uninstall /kb:971033

    and hit the Enter key

Accept the warnings/confirmations, and wait for it to complete

copy and paste the output (if any) from the command prompt window to a reply here,

    Reboot

    reinstall the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033

    Reboot

run another MGADiag report, and post it.

  • Noel,

Thanks for your response. Upon attempting to remove the update via command line, it gave me this error: "Installer encountered an error: 0x800f080d".

Just quickly before trying to uninstall, I had looked through installed updates in Control Panel, and didn't initially see KB971033 as installed.

After a reboot and a reinstall of that update, it does now show up as installed.

Here is the new report, and the user is going to let me know if it still pops up:

Before I try and work up a fix protocol for those, please run a CheckSUR scan - it may either fix some of these, or find more problems....

Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

  • Hello,

Sorry about the other account. For some reason it kept saying "unexpected error" when attempting to post from the other account.

It seemed to have run okay. It looked like Windows was installing a hotfix update, is that what CheckSUR should look like?

    Here is CheckSUR.log: http://sdrv.ms/UiINjs

    And CheckSUR.persist.log: http://sdrv.ms/UiIRQ1

    Thanks,

    Eric

  • That happens sometimes - MS is still trying to work out why.

There's a fair few files that need fixing there as well (and may be more, once we do fix them).

It'll take me a while to create the two fix protocols required for all of this, so it won't be until tomorrow.

If you haven't heard from me by Friday am SHOUT! :)

  • Here's the first set of files....

    I've uploaded a file - mrmaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at  Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…

Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder  mrmaa in the same place.

Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

  • Thanks for the response,

Here are those files after trying that.

    CheckSUR: http://sdrv.ms/WnrKKB

    CheckSUR Persist: http://sdrv.ms/10xG1pK

I will try your second set once I can coordinate a time with the user, should be over the next few days.

    Thanks,
    Eric

  • No problem - there's a couple more fixes that will need to be done, but I'm having trouble sourcing the base files

Here's the list of what couldn't be fixed do far....

    Unavailable repair files:
    servicing\packages\WUClient-SelfUpdate-Core-TopLevel~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.4.7600.226.mum
    servicing\packages\WUClient-SelfUpdate-Core-TopLevel~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.4.7600.226.cat

We'll wait and see what the other fixes missed before trying to get these sorted

I've managed to source the other files now (thanks, Tom!) so I'll post the fixes later today.

  • Thanks Noel,

The user has confirmed that the "Windows is not Genuine" popup has stopped.

Here is the new CBS log: http://sdrv.ms/14rDceO

And the Check SUR Logs: http://sdrv.ms/14qkq6w http://sdrv.ms/14qkoLW

    I think we're making progress! :)

  • Great - CheckSUR fixed the one remaining mum/cat error, and SFC found nothing to complain about.

    I think we've got it fixed :)

It's  worth checking Windows Updates functions properly, but assuming that's OK, you're good to go.

  • Okay, great to hear. Right now it is reading that Windows is up to date, but we'll see in time.

Thanks for all of your time and expertise! Have a great day.
