XP HOME ACTIVATION PROBLEM RRS feed

Good morning, everyone. I'm a PC technician. I just re-installed XP Home on a customer's Compaq Presario S5000cl using the COA license key on the top of the machine(she can't find her Recovery CDs and System Recovery Partition was bad) and updated to SP2 and put on all the Apps. Now i decide to activate and the stupid MS server is telling me i must have "mis-typed" the Product key. I changed(re-typed) it twice and same *** and since i'm in JAMAICA i'm not in a position to call MS rightnow, is there a work-around for the "mis-typing" issue or should i just let the customer deal with the activation phone call?

  • Vertigotech,

Sorry, there is no work-around for your situation.

You have to either do a Telephonic Activation or do a clean installation using the Compaq recovery CDs.  Has anyone contacted HP/Compaq to see if they have the Recovery CDs that can be shipped out to you?

Also, I am curious as to why you cannot call for activation from Jamaica?  This MS KB article lists international call center phone numbers:  http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/resources/vol/numbers.mspx  These are volume activation call centers, but they should be able to supply the info you need.

  • Good Morning Vertigotech,

I would like to provide additional information to Dan's post.   Recovery CD’s are specific to your computer manufacturer  and model. Please contact your manufacturer's technicial support  for assistance. They should be able to assist with your request and/or questions. As Dan mentioned try and order the recovery media.  Since the telephone number and web sites are not maintained by Microsoft we cannot make any warranty as to their validity.

I have included their contact information here for your convenience:  800-474-6836
