Genuine to Invalid overnight RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've had my Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit running for about 2-3 months now.  I've been activated and "genuine" the whole time.

I started up my PC today and my Aero wasn't working, so I figured instead of messing about I would just restart.

Upon restarting I got a message saying that my Windows Vista was not activated.  So I went into Control Panel -> System, in which at the bottom it shows "Windows is activated".

So I ran the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (1.7.0012.0) and it tells me this:

How did my system go from legit and "genuine" last night to being "Invalid" today?

Someone please explain.  I can't even try to "get genuine" because it says I have to "activate" first.  However, I can't activate because my system is ALREADY activated.  So I can't do anything.  I will not be willing to simply re-install Windows because I have everything on here.

So what can I do about this, because it's rather ridiculous that my system just happens to go "Invalid" overnight.

Please also post the error code you get (if any) when you validate by clicking "Validate Windows" here: www.microsoft.com/genuine
The error code will be gray and in brackets at the end of the message on the page that says validation failed.  (It'll look something like this:  [0xC004C000]).

If your System Properties window is showing that you're activated and online validation says you're not, please:
    1. Phone activate and speak with a support agent when you’re given the option.  You can start by typing "slui.exe 4" in the search field in the Start Menu and pressing Enter. Follow the prompts through phone activation (be ready for lots of numbers) and then reboot.  The phone activation process takes about 6 minutes.
    2. Once you're done, please revalidate by clicking on "Validate Windows" here: www.microsoft.com/genuine
After you've validated successfully you can log out and log back in or reboot to get rid of any non-genuine messaging you may be getting.

If you’ve tried phone activation and you're still reaching the same validation failure page (with error code 0xC004C4A6), please open a free service request by visiting: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860 and post your confirmation number here.  I'll contact you directly so we can figure out the cause of your issue.

If you're not in the US, please also post the name of the support agent who contacts you by e-mail once you've made the free service request.

     Thank you!

  • My Vista installation has been working fine for 2 months. Last night I tried to download a tool from the Microsoft website that required validation and it failed. The error code is as follows: [0xC004C4A6] Windows must be activated before validation can determine if this copy of Windows is genuine. After installing some updates and rebooting the system I started receiving a message after I logged in that Aero was disabled and the bottom right hand corner of the desktop contains a message that This copy of Windows is not genuine.

The system properties on the computer show that it activated successfully as does the screen generated from slui. I followed the recommended steps from some other posts and the end result is the same. I am able to activate successfully via internet and phone but the validation error message persists.

I submitted a request first thing this morning with my WGA diagnostic tool information and received a confirmation that it was recieived but no further contact since that time. The confirmation number is 1038326377. Are there any other steps I can take to resolve this issue.

  • Hello simplicity,

I've sent you an e-mail titled "simplicity - your Vista Validations Issues Forum post" and I'll just need you to post the results of the WGA diagnostics tool (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012) here or in an e-mail back to me.  Thanks!

  • Hi there,

I purchased Windows Vista Home Premium and it was running fine. Only today I have received a Validation request. I have already validated it. Im getting the same p[rblem as these other guys.

Why am I now getting this error? Is it because of the last update the other day that has caused something to go wrong? I have tried entering the code inthe activationscren but it is just saying it has already been used. The WGA tool is saying it is invalid. How can this be when it is a genuine copy and was working for the last how many months?

    Windows Validation error:
    [0xC004C4A8]

    Saturday, June 30, 2007 8:40 PM
  • I had to fix it myself with no help.  I found the problem was that I changed my dvd drive.  The dvd drive I used to install vista became to loud for me so I installed a new one.  The next morning I was no longer Genuine.  I week of trying to get help led to nothing.  In a last desprite try to fix my vista I dug my old dvd drive out of the trash and installed it back in to my ultra quite computer.  BAM like magic my vista was Genuine again.  Now I have the problem of a loud dvd drive that I can't remove.  You might have to have all the original hardware you installed vista with to have it Genuine.  I hope this helps someone out there as nobody helped me with this problem.

  • Hi

I ran AVG (the free version) and it says there was a change made in "C:\Windows\system32\user32.dll" in which it specifically refers to file "user32.dll" as the file that was changed.

I have not been able to get to Windows Update. Every time I try to go there a window opens for a second then disappears and then nothing else happens.

I also tried to go to my Control Panel and the same thing happens, a window opens for a second then disappears then nothing else happens. So I can't even get into my control panel to see if my Windows Vista Home Premium is activated.

I keep getting the "This copy of Microsoft Windows is not genuine" box popping up and when I check the validation I get error code: 0xC004D401.

Everything was working last week and before except that I would periodically get an unexpected shutdown of internet explorer or an unexpected shutdown of windows vista premium.

I have to the best of my knowledge a valid Windows Vista Home Premium version disc complete with the product key label/number stuck to the back of the case.

How do I get this fixed. If I put in my disc and reload windows vista will I lose all of my music, picture, etc, files? How do I get to my Control Panel? How do I get to Windows Update to see if there might be a fix for this? Right now I don't have access to these things that might help me. Can anyone help, I'm not a computer guru so please take me through step by step if you can?

    Thanks

I've had my Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit running for about 2-3 months now.
