Re-installing windows XP problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a dell PC dimension 1300 bought in 2005, 2 months ago, my hard drive was badly damaged. since i have some project to do, i bought a new hard drive, and since dell didn't provide any recovery CD again since 2004 i use the old copies of windows XP that my cousin provide me just in case of emergency. is there anyway to re-install my windows again using the cd key that dell provide when i bought their PC using another person windows CD?

  • Alimose,

Yes there is, but the prefered method for many reasons is to use a Dell Operating System Reinstallation CD.

Contact Dell tech support and order one, they will ship it to you for less than $15.

  • i already called Dell tech support just now and they said i cannot have the OS recovery CD because my warranty had expired. so, is there any method left for me?

  • Hi Alimose,

The problem is, that Dell modifies thier version of XP so that the Product Key will only work with thier version. So using your fiends version of XP, would most likely not work as the Product Key will probably be rejected.

I suggest asking your non-WGA related inquiry in the Windows XP newsgroup: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
