Error message: "Creating volume failed because of an error in an external component." RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm at the last stage of the install, Finalizing Installation and getting this message:

"Creating volume failed because of an error in an external component."

I'm pasting part of the error log.  I hope someone out there can help.  I've spent days trying to get this darn software installed.  Thanks!

    Hi,

Are you providing any required drivers? These need to be installed twice; once during the initial graphical portion, and then again during the text mode portion by using F6 - note that this prompt is very quick and easily missed.

Also, are you leaving the DVD in the drive through the reboot? It should be left in until you get the Welcome screen.

Another possible cause, is the DVD drive. WHS is very choosy regarding DVD drives, and some people have had success by exchanging drives.

  • I did provide the drivers at both times.  In the GUI and the text mode.

I may have taken the DVD media out of the drive, so I'll try putting that back in.

I'll also try a different DVD drive since the one I'm using is a little old.  Thanks for the response.  I'll let you know how it goes!

  • I tried a different DVD drive but got the same error message.  Can anyone think of any other suggestions?  Thanks!
