Invalid Product Key- Need fix RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a used computer a few years ago, and now it is apparant that another version of windows was installed on it, and I keep getting an invalid proudct key error.  Every test on Microsoft will not allow me to even BUY a new version of windows.  Is there any way of fixing this without re installing the original windows program?  I am not sure I would know how to go about doing that.

  • Hello Backyardfarmer,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. The Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 and Windows Media Center  product keys installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a key generator. The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement (EULA).   You will find numerous sites where this key has been posted.  Use your favorite search engine and paste in the product key 9MT6X-PGKC8-J4JTM.  Below could be a possible scenario. Curious what problems are you having after being forwarded to Get Genuine? Are you not being given the opportunity to purchase the WGA Kit? Where in the USA or other area do you currently reside?

There are situations which can cause Windows and Office to become non-genuine. Let me give one example.  Customers have taken in their systems along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola' no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update or even a template used with MS Office. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but either a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) or a keygen’d product key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months or even a year or more then suddenly becomes blocked.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer. You will need to uninstall Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 and Media Center before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are several options available for you to get Genuine. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take. Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you, who have become victims, to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  . Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs.

Your best course of action is to contact the Dell technical support. Inquire what the cost is for a recovery/restoration media disc and order the appropriate recovery media for your model number. This disc will restore your computer back to factory settings. There are other options available also such as purchasing software directly from Microsoft @ http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/ as well as the WGA KIT. Also please research the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) for all the correct usage agreements. Please contact us if you have any further questions.  Another alternative may be to visit Dell Community Forums @ http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/. Maybe you can search for replace a lost Dell system restore disk.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

    Thank you,

Thanks for all of your information.  I am not surprised because I had figured this out previously that the Media Edition currently installed is not legit. BUt it not a total loss, as my Microsoft OFfice PRofessional is actually genuine.

    To answer your questions

Curious what problems are you having after being forwarded to Get Genuine? Are you not being given the opportunity to purchase the WGA Kit?

Yes, I am not given the opportunity to purchase the WGA kit.

Where in the USA or other area do you currently reside?  NOrthern Virginia

I beleive I do  have the original CD for the windows that came with the system.  It is entitled Reinstallation CD Micrososft Windows XP Home Edition.  I am afraid of reinstalling windows.  Can you advise me how to do this and if I risk the programs and files that are currently on my computer.  I do have a Maxtor external back up drive. What do you mean exactly when you say "all personal data " will be lost  with a reinstallation.

    Thanks

  •      You are welcome for the information :-). First you won't have an opportunity to purchase a WGA upgrade kit because Media Center doesn't qualify. Now you need to make a decision as what operating system to purchase. Please review the following website located here:  http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=390&tabid=1&WT.mc_id=0207_08 . Here you may review and compare the various versions of Vista Operating Systems which are available for purchase should you decide to upgrade. Vista provides many options as well as enhanced security feature so please take time and review what all the capabilities and features :-).

Where did you purchase Windows Media Center? My previous post I provided you with information to submit a piracy report. Microsoft does investigate all reports our customers submit. Also you may be eligible to receive free software should all the criteria be met based on the piracy website. If not it is important for all our customers to take time and file the report. This will help prevent future occurances from happening with customers.

Please remove Media Center Software ASAP from your system. Media Center is non-genuine and you can't verify what actually is on the disc. Non-genuine software have been shown to be full of root kits, malware, viruses and who knows what else---you'd be worse off than you are now.  Reinstalling windows isn't very difficult when you are using the reinstallation/recovery software which came with your computer. Please visit the technical support section for the manfacturer of the computer. Also you can call technical support for guidance.  Below I researched some information for the Dimension 4600.

When the system is reformated yes all your information will be wipped out. This is why it is important to always perform some sort of file management. Example create one folder anywhere. Next create sub-folders such as Pictures, Music, Internet Links, or any other information which you deem as important. Schedule a backup. The easiest way is using an external back-up drive and/or using a secondary internal drive. Myself I use both internal and external this way I have it safeguarded in two places. Please review the following MS document and maybe it will offer some more insight for preparing a hard drive for reformatting:  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/default.mspx
