Vista Activation, RRS feed

  • Question

  • All of a sudden my less than 2 wk old Thinkpad started acting up. Things kept getting worse so I tried System Restore a few times to no avail. Long story short for whatever reason the Activation Key stopped working and after trying a Microsoft patch that Lenovo support pointed me to and then trying to restore to the factory image, also at Lenovo's recommendation, I now have a totally useless computer that says "Device not found" "No valid operating system" etc.

    Thanks,

    Microsoft

  • Hello,

I am confused about the title of this thread. Your computer can't find any of the HDDs or bootable devices? how is this a Vista Activation issue when the OS isn't even running? (And, on a side note, how will the OS Recovery disk do any good if the computer, itself, can not see any devices to boot from)?

As for a Class Action Suit...Please contact Microsoft Legal, not Microsoft Support. That is not the type of issue I deal in. In fact, Since you made no mention of a suit in any of your posts, I can only assume it was meant to be provocative and I am removing it from the title.

I apologize for sounding confrontational, but if you look at any of my posts, you would know that I am the first one to admit that Vista has some problems. But I take exception to fact that whenever Anything bad happens with a computer (regardless of how unrelated to the OS, the issue may be)...It has to be the OS's fault. And while I can't speak to the Activation issues, that you describe, without seeing a Diagnostic Report, the fact that your current issue is apparently Hardware Based (and the fact that Windows (XP and Vista) will require re-activation when hardware is changed) it is not out of the question that the hardware issues, that lead up to your current situation, may have caused the Activation issues, as well.

Since your current issue is happening while the OS is not even running, there is nothing that I can do to help and, as such, I will be closing this thread as Aswered. But, going forward, If your current issue turns out not to be Hardware Based and the OS Recovery disk does, in fact, get your computer up and running and if you are still having an Activation or Validation related issue, please create a new thread, follow Carey's instuctions to generate a Diagnostic Report and post the report into the new Thread along with a detailed description of the Activation or Validation issue.

    Thank you,

  • Return your 2 week old ThinkPad back to the seller and request a refund or replacement.  Evidently, you have a hardware issue.

  • Thanks for responding Carey, but:

    A. I bought the last Z61t at Costco at a very good price, $500 after a rebate, and don't think that I can find anything that I

will like as much,  when it works, for anywhere near the price.

    B. From all of the posts that I have seen re. Activation problems w/ Vista as well as updates causing problems

I'm not so sure that the machine is the real culprit here.

My suspicion is in attempts to curtail piracy MS may be overly aggressive and punishing a lot of legitimate customers. I wonder if you were to take all of the people who have done nothing wrong and are experiencing the Vista Activation problems along w/ those whose systems may have been compromised by MS updates, possibly related to attempts

stop piracy, how many hours have been wasted trying to get their computer working again and recover lost files?

  • Please follow this troubleshooting procedure:

    1. Download and run the MGA Diagnostic Tool: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

    2. After running the MGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy".

    3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post. http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

    4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an appropriate solution.

  • I'm waiting for an OS recovery disc from Lenovo but in the meantime the computer in  question is pretty much a paper weight. When I attempt to boot it it says no OS, no HDD, no bootable devices found. I tried a copy of UBCD4Windows that I had made a while back which can find a 6g C drive but thats about as far as my skiills/know how get me.
