WHS reinstall failing after replacing system drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I have tried to reinstall half a dozen times with different results over the last few days.  The furthest I get is numerous reboots in, and after SP2 (I assume thats supposed to be power pack 2) it gives me a white installation window then kicks out to an "Installing Windows Home Server failed: The parameter is incorrect." with errorcode 0x80070057.

I have seen many things on this, including the leave your dvd in and finish etc.  Well the dvd is in, and its still stuck.  If I ok out and get to the later stages, it hangs on the recovering data.

I really prefer not to lose all my data so any help would be appreciated.

Do you see all of your hard drives in the Load Additional Storage Drivers window (and if not, have you been providing drivers in order to see all of the drives)?

  • It hasn't loaded that portion of WHS yet.  They were all there when I started the install.  Can WHS seem them, not sure, most of WHS has not beein installed, its mostly just windows server 2003 at this stage.
    ---

Interestingly enough, when trying to run power pack 1 it replies that it can only be installed on windows home server, and cannot be installed in server 2003.

Ummm, that window shows up even before you select Server Reinstallation...

They were all there when I started the install.

I assume that was in the Load Additional Storage Drivers window then.  And you didn't have to provide any drivers in order to see every hard drive in that window, right?

  • Sorry I misread, its been a long day.

Yes when I was installing, WHS saw all of my old drives, none were missing.
    ---
And it is self built.  Worked wonderfully when I installed it the first time.  Having to reinstall because of a failing system drive has been a nightmare.

You might try running chkdsk /r on each drive (starting with your replacement primary drive).  If nothing else, you can always recover the data manually.  See the FAQ post:  How to recover data after server failure for details.

  • most of my drives being set up for WHS are currently unavailable for chkdsk.  I have already run it once, but will do so again.  Any other suggestions? (and my WHS install is still incomplete.)

  • Try another DVD drive.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

Try deleting the OS partition (either by formatting or, for a better chance of success, use diskpart), then doing a fresh Server Reinstallation.  (It looks to me like it keeps re-doing the same one.)

  • For the record, I threw in a windows xp disk to reformat, that was around reinstall 5-6.  I will give it another whorl and see if it does any good.

  • ok, I reinstalled w/o putting in my old data drives, it worked fine.

Is it possible to restructure the drives w/o reinstalling and having it rebuild during the install?
    Saturday, February 20, 2010 3:42 AM
  • There's no supported (or even documented) way. I've seen the question often enough that I'm tired of it, so I'm trying to get an authoritative answer... :)
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • if so it will help me out, if not I will have to figure out how to get the install to work.

  • saw that, problem is I have a LOT of data.

Good news is I still have the main system disk that was going bad, but is not completely bad, I can use that to transfer the most important data.  I just prefer to not have to go through that effort, I am sure there is a procedure we can call outside the install, but I could be wrong.

Hey its the weekend I can give it another whirl if needed too.  My wife is just anxious to get access to our photos as we have some events upcoming and could use them.

Thanks for looking into it Ken, it is much appreciated.

  • Just so you know, it's likely to take some time if I can get an answer from Microsoft at all.

  • I appreciate you letting me know that.

Could you post either way though so I know I can wrap it up?

I may give it another whirl or 2 trying to reinstall, but I am fairly certain some part of the reinstall is breaking and that is why its stuck between windows server 2003, and WHS, and will not try and restore the data.

Thanks again for trying to get the answer though, I am sure others will appreciate it just as much if we can get a definitive way to make this happen.

  • Count me in on this one too. I've got the same error of 'cannot create operation to rebuild primary' after trying numerous times to reinstall WHS. I have 3 drives and my primary drive failed along with the operating system. I'm really really stuck because I can't get to any of my data. A lifetime of photos, videos, data etc. I've got no choice but to persist with this. WHS has been very unkind to me throughout its nearly 3 years of life. I'm inclined to chuck it in a bonfire once I salvage what I can from it.

Someone please please help. I really need to fix this.
