p2p extension in favorites RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • hello, for some reason some of the links in the ie favorites have converted by having a .url.p2p extension.  i thought they would clear up after a couple of days syncing mesh, but they are still present.

here is an example:  scientific america.url.p2p

can anyone provide some enlightenment on this issue.

    thanks.

  • I assume that you are referring to Windows Live Mesh, not Live Mesh - www.mesh.com, so you are in the wrong forum.

For discussion of the new Windows Live Mesh (formerly Sync), (as well as the released Live Sync version) go here:

  • You're welcome - it is quite confusing.

I meant to add another bit to my reply. How many computers are you synchronizing favorites with? Is the extension issue only happening on one of them? Are you signed in an online on 2 or more PCs at the same time? P2P would mean that the file (the favorite) is being updated from anther PC. I was under the impression that WLMesh used the .wlx extension for a file that was targeted to be updated from another PC in the Mesh.

Are you or were you using any other sync software?

  • well, the meshing had been going pretty good for a few weeks.  i had noticed the wlx extension's on each computer, but they cleared up and the urls became normal.

but the url.p2p showing up in some of the urls was surprising.  i think the problem started up when i decided to do some cleaning up of the favorites a couple of days ago because each computer, ie desktop and laptop had duplicate favorites.

so i deleted the duplicates from the laptop side and somehow some of the favorites on the desktop showed up with that url.p2p extension.  also i noticed that most of all the favorites on the desktop no longer have their homesites gravatar.  i saw nothing but tiny white pages with the letter e in them.

what i think might be a clue is that the url.p2p urls on the desktop have not sync'd back to the laptop.

  • That is interesting. The .wlx extensions are expected. They are placeholders. Once the data is fully synchronized, they should be gone. Duplicates are created when the file is changed on both sides or appears to be. The duplicate file name is appended with the source computer's name and it is then replicated to the other PC(s) you sync with.

I sync my favorites between 5 computers using WLMesh and haven't seen any duplicates, so I can't confirm the way it is currently handled, but I doubt that it adds a P2P extension.

What seems particularly odd is that you mentioned the fact that the favorites are on the desktop. Are you synchronizing your desktop? Or are you synchronzing Internet Explorer settings/favorites under "program settings" in the WLMesh setup? If you are Synchronizing the desktop, those are not "favorites" as such - they are shortcuts. Favorites are located in a special folder accessible by IE, typically located under %users%\(username)\Favorites - alongside \Desktop, \Documents, etc.

So, assuming that you are synchronizing the Desktop, not IE settings & favorites, and that you have not changed the default location of your %Favorites% folder, are any other desktop shortcuts affected or only the .url shortcuts?

I guess that I'd want to clear up those details to help understand what may have happened and how you "cleaned up" the Favorites on both computers...

(Yes, I know I sent you to the other forum, by the way....)

  • yes, i saw the wlx extensions and they disappeared after the sync.  i also saw the duplicated urls appended with the computers name.  but now neither of the computers favorites reflect the computers name.

here are a couple of more examples of what popped up in the favorites on the desktop pc:

    PC World .url.p2p

    washingtonpost.com.url.p2p

when i click on the properties page for them and go to previous versions, they have three previous file versions, 2 shadow copies and a backup.  but they all have a url.p2p extension.

incidentally when i mentioned the desktop, i was referring to the desktop pc and not the desktop of shortcuts. i guess i can simply delete them and be gone with this issue.  but interestingly, i seen this happen before a long time back.  and if i recall, it was using another favorites syncing program from microsoft.  i don't remember exactly what, but it may have been an earlier development of this mesh program.

  • Thanks for the clarification. I'll be interested in learning what the root cause of the renaming turned out to be if it was due to Windows Live Mesh or something else. I think I'll subscribe to your thread over on the WLMesh forum. :-)
