Sync from windows mobile to legacy back end RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

Ou company has a legacy application built on the LAPP stack (Linux+Apache+Postgres+PHP). Many man years has gone into that application and its running in a produuction environment at many of our sites. Nonetheless we are interested  now in building a mobile solution that will be able to synchronise data with this existing system. We are considering building our mobile solution on the windows mobile platform with the sync framework and SQLCE running on the hand held. Is there ways to synchronise with our legacy application ? Is there documentation/ aricles which can describe how to do this ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Mohan,

Microsoft Sync Framework should be able to work in your scenario. One thing you will need to think about is at what abstraction level you want to sync - do you want to sync directly with the PostgreSQL database (i.e. sync tables / rows) or do you want to sync through some other interface (perhaps a web service you expose that accesses the data stored in your solution at a business object level)? In either case you can use the Sync Framework though how you structure your solution will vary.

In the former case you can use Sync Services for ADO.NET to sync with the handheld. In the latter case you could write a sync provider to sync against your custom webservice. The former will be more of a "turn-key" approach, but the latter offers more control. A good place to start is the whitepaper How to Choose a Data Synchronization Solution.

Please also feel free to post / contact me if you have any other questions.

    Hope that helps,

    Neil
