  • I am attempting to activate windows vista.  I had a HP pavillion that had a bad mother board.  I then installed the hard drive from that computer into a Dell D630 that a friend's buisness was getting rid of (they removed the old hard drive).  I have windows installed and running but get error code 0xC004E003 when I try to activate.  I have tried several times, installed both service paks, and tried the command prompt commands, nothing seems to work,  I do not ever get an option to activate by phone.  The windows diag appears below.  I understad that I may be dealing with an issue related to the BIOS of the dell using an HP HD install of windows.  Thank for any help.

In theory an OEM_SLP License should not require activation – unless the install was done without using the manufacturer’s recovery disk, in which case it would not work.

The Problem here is that you have broken the Licensing rules – an OEM installation CANNOT be moved to another PC under any circumstances.
The Dell computer remains licensed only to use whatever OS it came supplied with initially – and you cannot use the Hewlett Packard Key on a Dell Computer.

For what version and edition of Windows is the Dell Licensed, according to the COA sticker on its case?
