OCS 2007 Extending the Schema RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are at the stage of testing Office Communications Server (Proof Of Concept).  We have installed a test server, and have a licensing server in place.

We have looked through the OCS 2007 Setup, and noticed one of the first steps is to upgrade the schema.

What we are unsure of is, should we be letting the setup program (GUI) perform the schema upgrade, or is there a more manual method which we should use (including backup)?

If we should be using a manual method, will the setup program know that the schema upgrade has already been performed once we get around to doing it?

    Many thanks for any help.

You can perform the changes to AD either manually (via command prompt) or let the setup do it automatically. Regardless of which option is used the setup wizard always performs a check to see what state each component is in before advancing.  So once the schema, forest, and domain are successfully prepared the setup wizard will reflect that state with a little green checkbox indication completion.

I recommended using the setup GUI to perform each step and given your AD environment a couple hours (more or less depending on size and complexity) to replicate each change fully throughout the network.

  • If you have large environment, Its always recommand to run the Schema Prep on your schema Master to avoid any kind of issues, So run Schema , Forest and Domain Prep from your schema Master or any of the domain controller then execute the OCS setup from OCS bits.
