Asked by:
Why can't I use a "work or school" account to log into this forum?

Question
-
It seems this forum requires a "Msft account" which is inconsistent with other Msft forums like the answers.microsoft.com site. It would be much easier to use one id for ALL Msft forums. This seems like a no brainer to me - please let me know if I'm missing something.Saturday, August 26, 2017 2:57 PM

Your work or school account is strictly associated with your workplace or school and has nothing to do with Microsoft.
From another perspective, Microsoft has no access to your school or workplace network.
I would be surprised if Answers.microsoft.com allowed you to do this, for the same reasons. It is possible however, since answers.microsoft is a public end-user forum, that it accepted this type of account as an account creation method. (Not actually using the work/school account, but using the same username/password).
Technet is less of an end-user forum, and more for Microsoft support professionals. The forums are a sub-section of a larger Technet network, which includes a number of resources that are only available to Technet subscribers, therefore an actual Technet (or Microsoft) account is required.

When you create an MSDN / TechNet profile it is linked to a Microsoft account for authentication purposes. Other Microsoft technologies may have their own profiles but ultimately would be linked to your Microsoft account for logon / authentication purposes. Microsoft Answers is a different platform and as such has it's own profile setup but links to your Microsoft account.

I'm just looking for consistency so I only have to use one id - answers.microsoft.com does allow either type of id, and has since Msft came up with the dual identity system. The work or school account (formerly known as "organizational account") isn't really "strictly associated with your workplace or school" - I have one from a lapsed Office 365 account that has nothing to do with work or school and that I still use regularly.
With the growth of Office 365, I suspect the number of folks having work or school accounts and visiting this forum is growing, so allowing log in using those id's would be a convenience, with no apparent downside.

Good point, Richard, but if I'm logged out of the answers site, and enter a work/school account id (.onmicrosoft.com sub domain) it asks what type of account it is, and if I select "work/school account", it logs me in.
It's actually odd that we even have to discuss this, and there's no black and white answer. An identity system shouldn't leave any room for this type of confusion.

Your 3rd reference confirms what I've been saying, but was posted over 2 years ago so it's a little ridiculous it hasn't been fixed yet.
2) There’s a small number of Microsoft business services that only support “Live ID” accounts, and not organizational accounts that are used for other business services like Office 365. Examples include MSDN and Volume Licensing. We’re working with these teams to add support for organizational accounts. This will allow everyone who already has an account they use with Office 365 to use the same account to sign in to these services.
Two years later, this hasn't been done either:
To address this we’re building the ability to be signed in with more than one account at the same time, in the same browser. This should start showing up on Microsoft web properties later this year.
