  • Question

  • I am running live one care on a vista machine. Per the latest with live one care i started uninstalling live one care through the add/remove programs. When I went to restart the system vista starting isntalling updates. when the system came back on I notice stating that live one care was not running properly and that I should restart the computer to see if it would start properly. Of course it isn't working properly I uninstalled it. so then I figured I should reinstall live one until I can figure out what is going on. Well i tried to re-install the software only to find out that I cannot do anything some how the computer was in safe mode. Assuming that it was in a vista safemode i reboot and hit F2 well it was not in vista safe mode, after hours of trying to figure out what was going on I discovered that it is actually in live one care safe mode. how can this be I uninstalled live one care.  I basically cannot see anything that would be considered administrative even though I am the administrator (there is only one user on this laptop)  any help on what I can do would be appreciated.

  • Try this - Cleanup tool - http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/399071e2-49dc-4767-932d-d261e3965943/

There is no "OneCare Safe Mode" - you would be starting Windows in Safe Mode.

If the cleanup tool doesn't work, you might want to contact support for help:

  • Thank you for your input, but as I stated it is not in windows safe mode when I reboot and i hit F2 it is telling me it is running in standard mode NOT safe mode. So if one care has no safe mode, What else could it be.  I went to the link above you suggested it states you must be an administrator to run the download, as I explained in my original email it will not allow be to do any administrative functions such as load software, add or remove programs, i cannot even see the control panel when the box comes up it is empty.  do you have any other suggestions?

  • If you reboot without pressing F2, what happens?

You should boot into Windows normally.

No matter if you are in Safe Mode or some other state, download the cleanup tool to the desktop. Then, right click the file and select "run as administrator" in order for it to run.

Anther option is to perform a System Restore to put the system back into the state from before the failed uninstall.

  • Hi. I have been advised by Microsoft to run Windows OneCare Live in Safe Mode. I've seen your command line, which is c:\program files\microsoft windows onecare live\.....but it doesn't work. I'm assuming I'm at the c: prompt and then type \program files\... Certainly putting the whole line in does not work. The SafeModeAVScanner line also does not work in Safe Mode. Am I typing it in wrong? Microsoft emailed me and told me to type: CD /D %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live...,which also doesn't work. Again, I'm assuming CD means I should be at the c:\ prompt. Doesn't matter, no even when I type these line verbatim, doesn't work. Their SafeModeAVScanner did not include .EXE (even that doesn't work) but included -s -h (that doesn't work either). Could you provide really basic steps for a novice? Thanks.

Please respond to the email you received from Support and advise that you need more information. I have no idea what you are trying to do. You've responded to a completely unrelated discussion.

When you open a command prompt window or run Safe Mode with Command Prompt, your start by typing:

    CD\
       <Enter>

That brings you to the "root" of the drive.

Then you type: CD %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live
       and press Enter

Once you are located in the correct folder, which is where you end up after typing the two lines above, you can then run the Safe Mode Scanner

Since I don't know what you are doing or why, I can't tell you what you should do next.

If you are working to clean up an infection, go back to Support.
