Equipt issue (Again!)

Question
-
I'm the guy who had nightmares trying to get OneCare to install through Equipt about five or six weeks ago and only succeeded after reformatting the hard drive and starting from scratch. Two days ago I got the red flag indicating something was wrong with OneCare. I got the error message that "OneCare is missing a required update." I tacked a post onto another person who had an identical issue on the update forums here. His/her problem resolved itself, mine didn't. I followed all of the suggested fixes for that issue, except for the final one, uninstalling and reinstalling OneCare. With the problems I'd had earlier I wasn't looking forward to doing that. Today I tried that. When I followed the instructions to uninstall OneCare I got the following error id 0015-80070643. I checked to see if OneCare was still on the computer and it appeared to be gone so I tried reinstalling it and got the following error id 0020-80070643. When it didn't install it then attempted to clean the installation and I got the following error id 0029-80070643. I then used the OneCare cleanup tool that I became all too familiar with during my last skirmish with OneCare and tried reinstalling only to get the 0020-80070643 error id again.
This is looking all too familiar to me. I really, really, really don't want to have to go back and reformat everything all over again. I also don't want to spend another 5+ hours on the phone to technical support only to end up worse off than I'd started. There should be no conflicts with any previous anti-virus/anti-spyware as there hasn't been anything else installed since the reformatting. Does anyone have any ideas on anything I can try short of reformatting? If I have to go through that every month or so then I'm definitely not going to be an Equipt resubscriber! Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry to report that this is the reincarnation of the earlier problem that I had. Prior to reformatting I'd backed up my data files and apparently whatever caused the initial problem got backed up along with my data. When I used the backups to restore the reformatted computer (after installing Equipt and OneCare successfully) I apparently restored whatever caused the initial problem. When this upgrade came along it ran into the same problem that I'd had earlier. I discovered this while going through program files and found an empty kaspersky file that shouldn't have been there after the reformatting. So the problem is the same one I had originally. Something (probably a corrupted kaspersky file) is hiding somewhere inside the computer and stopping OneCare Live from installing. I'm working with Microsoft now to try and find and resolve this issue, but I'm not wildly optimistic. The problem now is even if I reformat again as soon as I restore my backed up data I'll restore the problem. I really don't want to have to reformat every time an upgrade comes along. Hopefully Microsoft can come up with a solution to this issue.Tuesday, September 9, 2008 12:20 PM

gardenman,
Please check in with OneCare support.
I suggest contacting support for help with this. How to reach support - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2421771&SiteID=2
I am at a loss as to what can be the issue, since you did a reformat. From what I understand
Equipt already comes with OneCare.
However there seems to be another post with a user that has Equipt and OneCare and may be of some
help:

Good luck

I to received this error and searches took me to this post. Hopefully, this will help.
I went to the onecare.live.com/members and eventually to the web address below.
This page provides instructions and a link to another webpage that has a cleanup program for onecare. The cleanup program ran and seemed to clean everything up.
Just in case the link above does not work, I am including the link to the cleanup program as well.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/c/b/4cb845e7-1076-437b-852a-7842a8ab13c8/OneCareCleanup.exe
To get the program to run properly, you must save it to a location on your hard drive then run it from that location. In Vista you need to run the program by right-click the file, and then click Run as administrator.
I hope this saves you from the frustration I had in unistalling onecare live after the subscription expired.
Good Luck and Happy Computing!

How you ended up in this ancient thread is a mystery of the Internet search engines. ;-)
Details on the cleanup tool are posted here: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/399071e2-49dc-4767-932d-d261e3965943
