an error occured in the remote desktop activex controll installed on your computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello members
I have been googling around to search about the above error without success.
It is a problem with one of the machines(xp pro) that I have connected to the whs. It does happen when I want to connect with windows home server console after entering the password and push to connect.
Has anyone of you come across this before?

    Thanks.

  • Hi,
still waiting for your results of checking the event log on client and server.
You also did not answer my question related to the video adapter driver on the server.
Although it is not very likely there could be some interaction between the RDP control and the server services, which fails due to a lack of ressources.
Also check the log files in the hidden folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs on that client, if they contain more informations.
You could also try to uninstall the Connector software, delete the remains from Program Files Folder and the client registry and reinstall the connector after reboot.

The issues seems to happen very rarely, and nowhere I could see any answers with a successfull solution. So reporting the bug on Connect would be also recommended, besides digging deeper.

  • Hi,
this could be related to the known problem for Windows XP with Service Pack 3.
A solution can be found in this FAQ.

  • Hi,

I assume this is IE7 and if so, this could be a permission issue; can you confirm that it is enabled? To do so, click on Tools - Manage Add-Ons -  Enable or Disable Add-Ons and ensure it's set to enable the Terminal Services ActiveX control.
If this doesn't help, then deleting the following keys in the Registry will enable it: just note that you should use the File - Import/Export to export a copy PRIOR to doing anything.

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{7390f3d8-0439-4c05-91e3-cf5cb290c3d0} HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{4eb89ff4-7f78-4a0f-8b8d-2bf02e94e4b2)

If this still doesn't enable it, re-import the export and let us know, we'll have another think!

I tried as suggested in the FAQ but I could not execute the files in the command prompt.

    Hi Colin
the Terminal Services ActiveX is not existing in the add-ons.
and the keys are not existing in the registry.

"could not execute" is not very detailed. Which error message did you get?
A zip file with both files can be gotten here.
Maybe try to run the vbs file with a leading cscript command.

Is it Internet Explorer 7 you are talking about or do you try to use FireFox or some other browser?
Can you use the Remote Desktop Client to access the home server from that client using account Administrator and the console password?
Can you see any related errors or warnings or informational messages about rdp components in the time of attempted connections in the event log of the server?
Any detailed errors in the event log of the client?

On your Home Server, did you install a video driver from NVidia or ATI?
In this case try to import the following lines on your server  after saving them in a text file with extension .reg:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
    "SessionImageSize"=dword:00000020

Reboot and check, if the problem is solved.

    Olaf
It is the Home server console that is giving me the trouble. When I want to login through the console I type in the password and press the connect icon and then the error: "an error occurred in the remote desktop activeX control installed on your computer"
I can use the remote desktop client on the same computer without problem at all. Login to the whs and use the
server console(on the whs). It is just faster(at least from the other machines) to go through the console directly. So I would think that the error is on the laptop that I want to connect (to the whs) through the console and not on the whs?
    Is that understandable?
