I have a question that I would like to ask, I did some search and can't seem to find the exact answers.
Anyways here is the question.
I know that Windows Home Server will only backup files on different home computers, by comparing the hash of the file's clusters.
Now I clearly understand how that works, however what I want to know is, if there are files that are on the home computers being backed up, and I manually copy the files to the shared folder on my Home server, will it only get stored once (that is, does the backup files of the home computers share the same pool of file clusters with the Windows Home server Shared Folders) ?
The reason is there might be scenario say I have music stored on my shared folders will get copied to the home computer (that is backed up by Home server) because I would like to listen to them while there is no access to the Home server, but worried that storage space could be wasted.
Thank you for reading the thread and hopefully answering my question :)
Regards, Eric

Hi Eric, the shared folders and the backup use the same storage on the server in the context of disk space. But files copied to the shared folders are not identical with the files which are stored in the backup database. (You also can see the difference, since you can open files on shared folders instantly, while you have to go through the console to access files stored in a backup.) Be aware, that putting the files solely onto the server makes a backup of the server shares to external drives absolutely necessary. Otherwise your data would be lost, if the server fails seriously (which may happen due to reasons beyond the control of the operating system, like an overvoltage).
