  • we bought the onecare "all-in-one security and performance service" from a shop and tried to install it but its not working. we couldnt get it to work the first time we tried to install it so we uninstalled it and tried again but it wouldnt accept the key code so now we dont know what to do. we have gone onto the help site and it says something about pressing the "activate" button but we have never seen one and cant find one anywhere. on the screen it says that the computer is protected for the next 15 days and it has a subscribe button, but we already bought it instore and really don't want to buy it again. please help!!

  • If OneCare is running in trial mode, then click the subscribe link in OneCare, login with a LiveID (or create one at http://account.live.com ) and then select the option to subscribe with a retail PIN or product key.

*Before* doing this, if you ever activated/subscribed with the retail key already, you have a subscription and you will simply need to activate/subscribe using the *same* LiveID that you originally used.

If you proceed with activation and the key is reported as being incorrect, check the characters on the sticker - I use a magnifying glass to read the letters and numbers, which can be hard to discern for things such as a J, I, or 1.

If it tells you that the key has already been used, then contact support.

  • It may be running in trial mode but I don't have an activate button why is it running in trial mode when I purchased it from a store?

  • No matter what the source of OneCare - retail CD or download - it is in trial mode until you activate it by subscribing. You subscribe by signing in with your LiveID (or create a new one at http://account.live.com first and then using that to sign in) and then providing payment information or your retail box copy key/PIN.

If you already have a subscription since it was installed and activated on another PC, then signing in with the same LiveID on another PC after clicking the subscribe link will associate the copy installed with that existing subscription.

The terms activation and subscribe are used interchangeably. So, click on the subscribe link, sign in, provide the key. If it tells you the key is invalid, contact support for help per the above link.
